WFU Hoops: '22-'23 Roster Construction Thread: +Ituka/Carr/Appleby/Bradford

I believe this announcement has been moved up a week from May 10th. Timing bodes well for our chances. I don't have any inside sources anymore or any guarantees, but I think we're in good shape.

I saw Coach Shay at the grocery store tonight. Clearly I should've asked him about Appleby.

I think we're going to get Appleby

I'm not sure that he visited any other schools

No other visits were announced for him and I found nothing on him on anybody else's message boards. I like our chances here and I think it would be a really nice pickup just like Carr was today. Such a slow process for us this year but if we can get him on board tomorrow we'll really be just a couple pieces away from tourney potential once more.

carr is obviously another nice pickup although another bigger guy who isn’t a very good rebound. he probably can’t play the 5 so curious about his ability to defend on the perimeter.

Villanova didn't really have a true big man and I thought he defended decently well in that game in the tournament. Defense isn't his strength but if he can get in the weight room this summer to get a little more physical, he has the literal quickness and length to cause some issues on that end of the floor. Also a surprisingly good handle for a 6'10" guy imo.

Carr’s release on his threes looks straight out of Double Dribble for the NES.

Looks like a good player who should start at the 4 given who we have right now.

Given who we have right now he will 1000000% start at the 4 and honestly he'd start there for the majority of teams in the ACC imo. We don't know if Keller is ready for minutes in the ACC as a freshman and he and Carr are the only players on the roster that can play there as of now. If Jake doesn't return we'll almost definitely recruit another large wing or stretch 4 type as well as one or two more centers.

it’s not as extreme as the nba from what i can tell, but seems like most college teams have also moved away from starting two big men. especially if we land appleby, it’s easy to see monsanto being the second biggest guy in the lineup (he’s also a much better rebounder than carr.

more than anything at this point i think we need a big man who can rebound.

I’d agree if Carr had more size. But I don’t see a 210 starting C. It actually depends more on the guards and if we have two small guards with Hildreth, Monsanto, and one big.

I've seen some people on twitter saying "nice bench piece" for Carr and saying he only averaged 10 a game so he won't be a starter. LaRavia only averaged 12 a game at Indiana State and both of them played out of position at the 5 at mid major level which limited their production. Carr should excel offensively as a stretch four and in my opinion the biggest unknown is not with his ability to contribute offensively but his ability to guard on the perimeter and grab rebounds. As of now he's undoubtedly a starter as we don't really have any other options currently at the four, and I think that even if we had someone like Khadim Sy on the roster Carr would start over him. If he can get stronger and be an average or good defender and rebounder he'll be a key piece to any potential success next year.

Really nice get. True to his history as a head coach, Forbes is once again assembling a team that can shoot the ball.

LaRavia was also MVC All-Freshman in 2020 and All-MVC Second Team as a sophomore. It appears that Carr made the All-CAA Tournament team last year, but had no other league honors. Rightly or wrongly, those things help color perceptions.

Comparing ISU Jake and Carr. The numbers are pretty close in every category. Obviously some of this (rebounding, etc) could be more a function of the rest of the roster and the coach:

Jake had a higher usage rate, better assist and rebounding numbers

Carr had a better O rating, and was a better shooter from 2 and 3 (and overall) but not from the FT line

Carr took a few more 3's than Jake, Jake got to the FT line a bit more than Carr.

There is no substitute for guys who can put the ball in the basket, regardless of athleticism. Add height, and you have a contributor.

Jake has better handles and is stronger than Carr. That said, we get Carr for three years; he made a jump last year; think he can make another jump under this staff and after spending the next 6 months in WF's strength and conditioning program.

there is no reason to compare carr (or almost anyone else) with laravia. the reason for laravia's success last year wasn't that he put up good numbers the previous season at a midmajor, it's because he's talented enough to now be considered a possible first round pick. there are dozens of guys in each mid-major league that put up solid numbers, the vast majority of those who don't project as NBA draft picks won't be able to sustain their play against tougher competition.

even for dummies like us, the difference in laravia's highlight video at ISU vs. carr's is night and day. i think carr is undoubtedly a nice add and should contribute, but we were his only offer from a power school. comparing him to laravia is just setting him up for failure.

tldr: laravia is an exception, not the norm.
