2022 Football Deacs Season Thread (what a shitty end. fuck duke.)

I agree sustaining a top ten program is out of our institutional reach. But making the CFP playoff - actually having a run at a college football national championship, people! - has for the first time the last few years not been complete crazy talk.

We will only get so many bites at the apple and I’m so frustrated that we didn’t maximize some pretty incredible opportunities. Have to figure out what it will take to keep that window open.

QBs that aren't projected to start are prone to transfer.

Yeah, but he ain't starting next year anyway after he transfers.

So Mitch has three potential years as starting QB. Brett has four remaining. Assuming Mitch performs well as the starter, Brett would only get one year as the starter.

Did they not do this math before Brett committed to Wake ?

It seems wild to me to go to a school with the sole idea to win the starting QB job from your brother and then to transfer when you haven't accomplished that after a year, but yeah backup QBs transfer all the time.

Could be a situation where he fell in love with Wake as a school after seeing his brother here, but after being here a year the reality of not seeing playing time anytime in the next few years is really setting in.

Mitch is more of a running QB, right? So his backup will likely get more playing time than usual

Anybody ever noticed that Mitch really brings his arm back low when he throws? Looks like that's something they'd want to coach him out of. Our slow mesh requires a lot of throws in a lot of traffic and that looks like it would be recipe for bad things.

Frank Beamer (special teams #1), his son Shane, and our guy, Pete Lembo, just torch special teams at Clemson to win at Clemson.

We do the opposite, except for field goal kicking. But it's not like we had a game winner or "huge" kick this year. Maybe in our big Liberty win?

I'll add "special teams general" to our areas of concern.

But what does Katie Lembo think about it?

I believe it wasn't the case until covid year gave Mitch an extra to reduce Brett's opportunity.

There are some really hot takes on this thread. And fuck a bunch of you. Clawson repeatedly has said for years our margin for victory is always on a razor's edge. Shitload of one score games. How many years did we just get curb stomped week after week. Now you watch Wake and you are going to see a team that competes. That's enough for me. He's the greatest coach we ever hired...period. And you can be assured he's going to keep fighting. Some of you fucks opened champagne when last year's coach of the year signed an extension. Stop fucking whining.

Some scoffed at Billy Edwards transferring after last season, and he ended up starting a game for Maryland (who will play in bowl), and playing in multiple games for Terps. None of that would've happened if Edwards had stayed at WF.

I still believe in Clawson, but this reads like a post about Grobe from late 2009.

True. My optimism around Clawson comes from the ownership he takes (at least in his pressers) and willingness to look inward and make changes.

I was a bit annoyed with how much he seemed to blame injuries on defensive performance (esp last year) but his actions showed he didn’t really believe those excuses.

Another example: he liked to say we effectively had all offensive starters back (citing Nash and Greene returning from injury), despite losing Tom and Roberson (plus Chapmans and CBS) but I think statements like that are just him trying to build media hype, not ignoring facts.

Completely different situations.

First of all, Lobo was OC. WF's offense only breaks records now.

Second, as much as I love Grobe, he stopped recruiting with the same fervor. Look at the talent, or lack thereof, that Grobe brought in at the end. For those that buy into recruiting rankings, WF is recruiting at its highest level ever with its current class.

Third, Grobe was a great coach, but very set in his ways. Clawson is always looking to get better and improve. If you listened to Elko's pre-game presser, he said that WF offense has completely changed since when he was DC.

Comparing Grobe's final years to Clawson today is so unfair. Grobe had one awesome three year run 2006 to 2008. After that:

2009: 5-7
2010: 3-9
2011: 6-7
2012: 5-7
2013: 4-8

Clawson has just won his 7th game for 7th time in 9 years. His record of the last nine seasons is 52-35. You really want to compare that Grobe?

Jackson Hensley has also announced he is transferring. He is still a PWO which surprised me.

I expected him to play next year. I didn't think he was a PWO.

What a strange post. First, you're comparing Grobe's seasons after 2009 to seasons that haven't happened yet for Clawson.
Second, you're claiming there's some massive difference between Grobe's first season and Clawson's. Grobe was 59-51 his first nine seasons. Clawson is 58-53 in his nine seasons. That's not a huge difference. I don't know where you got 52-35 from.

I agree that Clawson is very different from Grobe for reasons we all know. But mack's defense and close games logic was very similar to what we saw after the 2009 season.
