2023 Football Scholly Tracker | In: Roberts (A&T LB), Ganious (Nova DT), Merrill (Vols WR)

Granted we didn't see a lot, and I didn't get the impression this season that Griffis is a game-changing rushing threat. He didn't look that much more mobile than Sam. He didn't have an eye-popping amount of rushing yards in high school. He does look pretty comfortable throwing running to his right. He runs a 4.8, which is not game-changing speed.

He had 15 rushes this season for 14 yards. The two sacks VMI had against him, he didn't move much in the pocket. Small sample size, I know.

I am not expecting a Wolford/Newman/Hinton type runner next season based on what we have seen so far. He made some great throws in the VMI game, including an under-pressure throw to Perry over-the-shoulder down the sideline, and a great back-shoulder to Banks. That was more impressive than any kind of rush I saw him make.

Happy to be way off on this, it just seems like there are a lot of posters assuming he is going to be a big rushing upgrade over Sam and I am not sure that is the case.

I remember the short slants too. Washington and Sage ran them pretty well.

Thoughts going into 2023:

  • I feel good about Mitch Griffis
  • Returning KWilliams, DGreene, Morin, and Banks along with Grimes/Horatio Fields/Micah stepping up will continue to make Wake the premier WRU in the ACC
  • Offensive line is a concern. Losing 3/4 starters from a group that was shaky all year is a major red flag.
  • Along with that, we need to develop a more consistent run game. Ellison is a quality ACC-level RB. Going to need Claiborne, Towns, and/or Carney to step up
  • We have to go to the portal for some Dlinemen and CBs ASAP
  • Jasheen Davis, Hazen, Chase Jones, Mustapha, and Garnes are all guys we will be counting on big time next year
  • Schedule is a bit tougher, but I think we'll be ticked off from this underwhelming past season

Wayyyyyy too early 2023 prediction:
Elon Phoenix - W
Vanderbilt Commodores - W
at Old Dominion Monarchs - W
at Notre Dame Fighting Irish - L
at Clemson Tigers - L
at Syracuse Orange - W
Florida State Seminoles - L
NC State Wolfpack - W
at Duke Blue Devils - W
at Virginia Tech Hokies - W
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets - W
Pitt Panthers - W

9-3 (6-2)

Is this an overly optimistic prediction? probably
Don’t forget that Carson will be back!

Cooley was/is a grinder. Walker was/is a home run threat. Pretty big difference in a guy who can get tough yards and a guy who can get the tough yards and then take it to the house.

Did Sam have a comeback game winning drive in his career? I remember multiple times this year he had a chance(UNC, Duke) where a FG or TD wins the game, and we failed.

Cuse in OT is the closest thing I can think of.

Definitely feels like people are overrating Cooley based on the Walker situation. I’m sure he will do well at Liberty but don’t think it’s definite that he was the best back on the team.

It seemed pretty clear to me that Cooley had better vision and definitely hit the hole harder than any of our other RBs as he regularly got the extra 1-2 yards after a hit. Ellison jukes too much and seems a touch slow to hit the holes and went down fairly easily compared to QC. Would have loved to see QC get some starter mins and play behind 1st team OL as think he would have shown himself the better back instead of being the 3rd back and often in clean up games where he still often shine.

One of those WRs listed in likely headed for bigger money elsewhere.....

Need to plug some holes. It's like an NFL offseason now.

While Sam goes down as the best QB of all time at Wake, Wolf was the better QB and the better QB for our offense.
It's just awesome to look back at Hartman, Wolford, Newman, Tanner Price, Riley Skinner and realize Wake has had pretty solid QB play for a while.

Price was better than people realize because those Wake teams were in Grobe's retirement years and sucked it up pretty back.

oof yeah they tried to make tanner into an option qb for a bit

i think he threw a pretty good ball

one of lobo's biggest victims

Any defense of Grobe needs to consider that that entire ridiculous mess was probably his idea.

Oh boy.

“With fewer than 100 total carries for the Demon Deacons, Cooley decided to enter the NCAA’s transfer portal and was wooed by right away by Liberty University.”

“Yeah, it was a chance to just look for a better opportunity, honestly, really just betting on myself to get the opportunity,” Cooley said in a telephone interview Monday while hanging out with former teammates Matt and Zack Foster and former Southern Nash head coach Brian Foster and his wife, Kim. “I wasn’t looking for a specific college to go to, I was just looking for somebody that was just going to give me that opportunity that will be right in front of me and I have the chance to actually work for it and not just handed to me, honestly.

“And yeah, like Wake is a good school and everything, but I felt like I didn’t have the most opportunities that I know I could get, so I can show the player that I really believe that I am. It was frustrating and just really stressful, so I decided to hit the portal and bet on myself about that.”

“Cooley pointed out that he and the Flames will be getting a fresh start under Chadwell, who employs a more running back-friendly scheme than the single-back look at Wake Forest.

“It’s a whole new coaching system coming in, a whole new offense, so it’s just like starting college all over again,” Cooley said. “So now it’s different because Coach Chadwell, he likes to run the ball and plus, he likes to have two running backs on the field.””

“But Cooley never got enough touches with the Deacons, with just 371 yards on 92 carries for a 4.0 per-carry average. He scored three TDs on the ground while catching two passes for 15 yards in three seasons in Winston-Salem.

“No regrets, just memories left,” said Cooley. “I did what I had to do there. I didn’t disappoint myself there with football or grades or anything. I kept my grades up there and that was pretty good. But Wake is a good place. It just wasn’t meant to be right now.”

Cooley, however, was appreciative for the life lessons he learned at Wake Forest.

“It’s going to be a challenge every day,” he said. “You’re going to go through depression, you’re going to go through stress, you’re going to go through everything there. But it’s just a matter of fact that you just get back up and keep fighting. I’d say college is not easy, especially when you’re an athlete and you’re getting up at like 4 o’clock in the morning on Wednesdays and stuff like that. But it’s a challenge that you’re willing to take take, willing to fight for.

“They’re not going to take it easy on you, they’re not going to baby you. They’re going to treat you like you’re a grown man and if you’re not ready to be treated like that, it ain’t gonna take you a long way. You’re either gonna drop out or you’re gonna go back down a bad road.””
Nothing wrong with this. He wanted more carries. He was good but about the same as Turner and Ellison. Maybe a better short yardage runner. Can’t please everyone.

Yeah. The more I think about this, the more I feel like we would’ve been saying the same thing no matter who was the 3rd back out of Ellison, Turner, and Cooley. We all would’ve thought that guy was the savior with how bad our run game was and with them getting a little bit of time and showing flashes.
