Wake Forest 2023 baseball season thread (Deacs end historic season with extra inning loss to LSU: Final record 54-12 and top 4 finish nationally)

That would be pretty cool. Seems like FSU and Clemson have great parks.
I suppose both of those series will be at The Couch next year though…..since both were away this year. At least I think they usually alternate.

NEXT SEASON the team deserves more than one megathread (even ignoring the negative LK vibes)

one for the offseason
one for non-conf
one for each week of the conference season
one for ncaa speculation
one for regional
one for super regional
one for each cws game
one to celebrate our deacon champs

i’ve spent so much time consuming college baseball content lately, need some time to do figure out what to listen to in the morning now
Offseason is already up! Started it last night.

Really hard to get over the sting of ole tommy tanks this morning. My god Rhett is a beast, he went toe to toe with pitching jesus. Pitchers and defense really were top notch, showed why we were #1.

Hard not to be absolutely gutted by the lack of offense though. I don't know the answer, whether we were just seeing a level of pitching we weren't used to, or if our park really does juice our numbers (by proxy making the pitching that much more impressive). We didn't really even get that many to the track though so I'm thinking we were just tight and facing a level we couldn't get used to. Who knows. Great season, hope Walters can keep the momentum going. It's hard getting there once, but it's a hell of a lot harder to get back again.
Yes it is, but I over the last dozen years or so there's a few who seem to get there about like UNC and Duke used to make the Final Four. Point being that yes it's very hard to get to Omaha and that includes the semi-frequent repeaters, but hoping that breaking the seal after 58 years will make our return a more achievable task in any year that we've got a fairly good club that's maybe not as dominant as this year's.

Lots of photos at the bottom of the article.

Did you catch the mistake under the Tre Morgan picture? It's says he got Cole Roland out at 1st....🙄

We still have a 33% win the whole thing percentage with the CWS. That’s better than everyone in the ACC. Remember that.

I have no idea what is going on in the world outside of Omaha this week. Apparently there was some Titanic related accident. Doing in law stuff this weekend instead of Omaha is going to be unbearable and now I will be in the office Monday.

Had a bad feeling about the elephant pitcher having drilled him in the ribs and more to it than we were led to believe.

Interesting that he dogpiled at the SUPERS. The injury explains the CWS O'fer at the dish. :(

Edit: Have to believe that we're still playing with a healthy Nick.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that the one play he made in Game 2 might've re-aggravated it. Could be wrong

They said on the broadcast that he tweaked it swinging pre-game, but it could have been aggravated in the game and then that put it over the top.

It definitely would explain the tentativeness at the plate at the CWS all series long. So many taken first pitch strikes.

Tubbo for lsu jumped on the first pitch he saw from Minacci and deposited it in the seats. Wish it would have been one of our guys to do that. :(

I am obviously not a MLB scout, but if the Pirates don't take Skenes #1 I think they have rocks in their head

spoiler: the Pirates have for a long time had rocks in their head

also just re-watched the squeeze play - Skenes hit 100 MPH on that pitch in the 8th inning. Obviously adds to the degree of difficulty - if it comes in at 95, perhaps Marek grounds it just a touch better and we score.

The game we needed was Wednesday, and now Florida won't even have to face Skenes. And we wouldn't have been able to pitch Lowder even if we'd won. Should have pulled out every stop imaginable not to have to face Skenes in a deciding game 3 as the visiting team. I'm not second-guessing Walter because it was an incredible season and Keener was so good all year, but he was clearly struggling and knowing Kurtz wasn't 100% and the team obviously struggling offensively I wish we'd stayed aggressive subbing pitchers like we did in the first LSU game.

And for a final time, giving the worse seed consecutive home games for the final 2 games of a 3 game series is just an absolute joke of a system. We should have thrown a game earlier in the tourney I guess.

First baseman also was having to hold the runner at first to start that play and still charged in to make the play at home. Just a fantastic defensive play. Watched it a few times now and think that we can debate whether or not trying to get it out of the infield with only 1 out would've been a better outcome, but the bunt play itself required a pretty high level of difficulty to get the out at home - they just made the play (like Brock did in the first game against LSU)

Personally, I still don’t get why Sully went to a long relief role instead of starting after being our Saturday guy all year. I know he got a little dinged up, but it’s not like he was on a pitch count. I would’ve preferred to see him start Wednesday but it’s not a big difference. Keener would’ve still come in.
