Republicans Shut Down the Federal Government Again & Suffer Humiliating Defeat

5 Pubs defected today and joined Democrats to block the defense spending bill. Seems like it's absolute chaos up there.

They established a system so a few dipshits elected by a few people could rule instead of one dipshit in the right family.
 
Don’t know if I’m supposed to be upset about the Defense spending bill? If they aren’t going to cut the shit out of it then I don’t give a shit if it passes, but also I don’t want a government shut down…what a fucking mess. If 90% of these assholes decided to jump off a cliff I wouldn’t care in the least.

I only posted that to show how much disarray there is. If GOP can't even come together on defense spending, how are they going to pass a rational spending plan for the Department of Education?
 
I'm not going to be upset about a defense spending bill. I'm not going to be all that upset about yet another government shut down as long as people rightfully blame GOP dysfunction and a lack of desire to govern.
 
Shutdowns are dumb because they end when the government employees deemed essential decide they are tired of working and not getting paid. If all services truly did shutdown immediately then there would never be a shutdown. Instead we have the ability to limp along until air traffic controllers decided they’ve had enough.

I have one offer in hand and would prefer to compare it to a forthcoming offer from the VA but they don't yet know if they'll have FY24 money for the position. So I'll have to take the first offer, which is fine, just with less leverage. Also, I think the federal position would be better for my career but what are you gonna do?

The GOP would love to abolish the Department of Education if they could. Several GOP presidential candidates over the years have said as much. Given that they no longer care very much about governing (that is, their actual job) allowing some federal agencies to wither on the vine due to lack of funds is probably fine with them.

It also helps to drive away otherwise competent people from public service at the federal-level, either directly (see iptb's post) or indirectly since even the most dedicated, altruistic public servants have a limit on the bs they can put up with.

This is the more insidious, decades-long play the GOP has made against our federal institutions: demonize, degrade, and disrespect the talent pool to erode from within the agencies' capacities to function effectively.

Agreed, I would only add that the NC GOP has been pretty much doing the same at the state level, especially with public education.

Yeah, that’s why I chose Dept of Ed, it was a like a subtle joke about the GOP being deeply insane.
