Recommend good stuff you've seen on Netflix streaming

Was doing a weeklong free trial of MGM+ to see a couple music docs but also ended up bingeing A Spy Among Friends, about all those English dudes the Cambridge Five who were double agents -- mostly centered around Kim Philby's unmasking/defection in '63 and his relationship with Nicholas Elliott and the fallout from that. Guy Pearce is Philby and Damian Lewis is Nicholas Elliott and both are solid. Solid series, quiet and moody, sometimes a little too much so, but it kept my attention and had enough twists/tension for something where very little actually "happens" like a lot of spy shit. But I'm kind of a sucker for spy shit.

A new Hammett/Sam Spade adaptation starring Clive Owen is coming soon to AMC, six ep mini-series. I'll give it the time of day.

Showrunner is Scott Frank (writer of Out of Sight, runner of Queen's Gambit), who I recently learned did a pilot based on Charles Willeford's cop, Hoke Mosley (played by Fred Ward in Miami Blues), which was going to star Paul Giamatti. Would have loved to have seen that one.

Winning Time is one of those "just inject it into my blood" type series. I can't get enough of it and I'm bummed that this is likely the last season.

I never knew (or perhaps forgot) Norm Nixon for David Thompson was a possibility. That's a classic "the trade you don't make is the right trade" situation. Or more precisely "the trade you defer". DT was a mega star at the time but things went off the rails for him real quick-like. Getting Byron Scott for Nixon was much better.

They sneak in a lot of details, almost Easter-egg like. Like, playing the Jazz they didn't even call him by name but one dude did a dunk that made it clear, that's Dr. Dunkenstein. I need to dig into it to see if they're merging old actual footage with the cast. That particular dunk was just too real and you can't get an actor off the street to dunk like Darrell Griffith.

Anyway, I'm giving this 10/10, pure guilty pleasure, like the Jack Reacher series (not that Reacher is 10/10). I know it's not art but damn I'm enjoying it.

I immediately recognized Mark Eaton in that brief clip. The hoops extra casting is fantastic.

I completely forgot Norm Nixon was married to Debbie Allen. Imagine being a two time NBA champ, presumably lifelong Laker married to Fame era Debbie Allen and you get traded to the fucking Clippers. What a gut punch.

DeVaughn Nixon was born shortly before that trade and he got to play his dad dancing with his mom before the trade.

I hate the Lakers and can’t get enough of Winning Time. That’s an accomplishment imo.
I found out the guy who plays Kareem played at Cal with one of my sister's best friends' husband. I may try to work those connections and see if he can be a guest speaker for my sport class next semester.

I never knew about the Kareem fire. Apparently, it happened during a road loss to Boston, so he wasn't there to see it. But fans did send jazz records to the team hotels and give them to him on road trips. And it did change his perspective about the game. That locker room speech is one of my favorite moments of the show. I'm kind of jealous of older fans who actually remember these events in real life.

The other kind of true event is there was no Honey Kaplan but Buss was "married" to another woman in the 70s while still officially married to his ex.

I assume the show will last through Magic's HIV revelation and his return to the game. I've seen there is a possibility they stick with it. Obviously, Magic, Buss, and Jeanie are key figures in the franchise well past the early 90s. But I'd love to see them stick with it through at least Jerry Buss' death and hopefully through Kobe's death. I can only imagine how the show would handle Kobe raping that girl.

Started watching The Witcher recently…through 3 episodes.

Good enough I’ll keep going for now.

I thought the first season (of the Witcher) was confusing and disjointed but good enough, then really enjoyed the second season. Haven’t watched the 3rd, but I’m highly skeptical with Cavill leaving.

It’s funny bc (no real spoiler) there is a scene in the second season that HAS to be talking to people like me as Jasker calls someone an idiot/simpleton for not being able to follow his song that essentially recaps the first season.

What’s the point of basically converting a PPV channel into a streaming service if they’re going to announce a show is cancelled at the end of a season finale? They didn’t even give people a chance to binge it yet.

I refuse to watch Winning Time.

I almost threw up watching Rudy.

Finished Justified: City Primeval. Lacks the charms and humor of the original series, but still very well acted. Didn't really buy the whole Raylan-Carolyn fling, but I guess he has never been picky about who he pokes. Annoyingly shot in a green filter like it's 2006 or something, and that was a really bad choice considering that such a substantial portion of the cast was black. It made them look darker and greener and just weird much of the time, plus it accentuated that this series was gloomy and dark and mostly humorless.

It was good to see Raylan again, and they did some lip service to the original series in the finale, but it was probably the worst of all the Justified seasons other than the MIchael Rappaport one. The acting was top notch though, right up there with season 2 or the original.

I guess this is the best place since new American Horror Story is out and you can watch it on Hulu.

I’m a big Emma Roberts fan. But I despise every scene with Kim Kardashian. She’s a horrible actress who’s annoying to watch.

We started watching One Piece on Netflix. My wife really likes it and I like it okay, but it's pretty weird and quirky. It's an adaptation of a manga comic, so that does check out.

Just started Justified Primeval over the weekend. So far it's pretty fun, though not as fun as the original. The one thing I can't get over is how awful Rayland's daughter is. During ep 1 I said to my wife that the actress had to be the daughter of someone famous given how terrible she is. Had no idea that she was actually Olyphant's daughter.

That makes more sense now.

Lol made the same comment in this thread. I finished it a couple weeks ago - thought it was good but didn’t quite reach the best seasons of the original run. Boyd Holbrook I thought was a great foil to Raylan. And I was a fan of how it ended although I could understand if others didn’t.
