Saudi World Golf Tour 2022/2023 Thread

All of Zack’s picks were awful. USA still w too much of the good and boy network, Fowler was a bad pick and neither JT or Speith were close to form. Schefler and Brooks getting beat 9&7; that’s almost statistically impossible

Scottie and Brooks were 3 down after 3 holes to scores of par-par-bogey. It wasn’t even like the Euro was even playing good.

JT and Brooks played ok. The other four US captains picks stunk. But the Euro picks were not great either. Need more from the top guys not named Max Homa.

Was that pic of Brooks and the boys smiling in LIV gear really taken on Sunday night? Who thought that was a good idea??

JT was 4th worst strokes gained overall. Speith and clark were last

Damn Xander. Maybe the American team needs to do like the Olympic basketball did for a while. Just forget the Dream Team anymore and send 12 guys that really really want to play. We will still lose, but at least they will have fun.

Compare whatever that is with Xander to Keegan Bradley immediately choosing to play in the Ryder Cup when asked whether he'd rather be awarded $10 million or have a spot on the team.

I'm choosing to believe that Zalatoris' injury is the primary reason that the US lost and do not want to be convinced otherwise

Seems like Cam Young will have a good shot at being on the next team

I think it's a good bet that Tiger gets the nod.
Tiger makes too much sense to captain the next squad.

1. The hype would be off the charts. Redeem Team vibes.

2. He's the anti-Johnson in dealing with the media and has the type of energy that the squad needs. This coupled with a NY crowd might create the most hostile environment we've seen for the Euros.

3. While he has friends on tour, he's not soft like Johnson. He knows this is the Ryder Cup not the Best Friends Cup.

4. He's won a major at Bethpage in what was arguably the toughest set up of the course we've seen, imo.

5. He's designing courses now and has probably picked up a thing or two on how to set up courses around specific skillsets.

We're probably going to see an insane setup on Bethpage in 2025. What they do with the distances will depend on what the team is looking like, but I fully expect them cut the rough way shorter than we've ever seen it at Bethpage and to burn the hell out of the turf. If they get this right it could be another skullfucking like we saw at Whistling Straits.

And I'm typing all of this out fully expecting some limp dick pick like Stewart Cink.

His length off the tee certainly would have been helpful on 17 and 18, the two holes where we dropped a bunch of points.

We have the same vice captains every cup and they are so old almost none of our players can relate to them. For Davis and Couples it’s a free vacation every two years; they are the Ryder Cup version of Joe Biden and Diane Feinstein, old and past their time. Like SEC football it just means more to Europe. Our guys didnt prepare and foursomes on Friday basically ended it.

Europe press conference after Whistling Straights was like a funeral, they were crushed. USA press conference after Rome seemed like a bunch of guys cracking jokes and not really caring. Luke Donald was a perfect captain and hope they bring him back again.
Agree on vice captains. Nobody has lost more Ryder Cups than Couples and Love, other than Phil, Furyk, Tiger and Stricker. But why don’t you use Trump as an analogy rather than a lady who just passed away? Or maybe Grassley and Mitch McConnell…

JT was 23d in strokes gained tee to green. Speith was 24th.

I understand criticizing JT as a captain’s pick, but at least he got 1.5 points.

Scottie got 1/4 points. Xander got 1/4 points. Morikawa got 1/4 points. Rickie went 0/2. Clark went 1/3. Spieth went 1/4.

If all of those guys, several of whom were no-brainer choices to the team, got fewer points than JT then I don’t think pointing fingers at Johnson for picking JT makes sense.

Yeah the strokes gained thing for a partner setup can be a bit misleading. JT had to carry Spieth and was tied 4th in points on the team. As the "controversial" pick he was fine, probably shouldn't have been back out on Saturday but it was full panic mode by then and at least he'd shown some fire in the morning.

Just some super head scratchers from Zach Johnson, not to mention him generally just seeming like a total doofus (especially when compared to ultra smooth Luke Donald). Sam Burns out first was insanity - particularly since it meant benching Koepka and screwing with his confidence - sending Spieth out in foursomes idiotic then putting him back out was even worse. Sounds like some choices were forced with Ricky and others sick, and bottom line is you're probably not winning if Scottie's not going to win a single match and guys like Mirakawa and Xander are no-shows.

Still, I think better pairings could have squeezed 1.5 or 2 points out of the Friday/Saturday matches, and that certainly would have made for a more dramatic Sunday.
