WFU Hoops: '24-'25 Roster Construction Thread: +Spillers/Biliew/Cosby/Johnson/Abass

We will have 4-5 spots to fill.

Juke has 1.

So, the remaining 3, get Ajayi, Dubar and a backup PG.

Everyone works ass off in weight room, especially Keller and 3-M.

Game on.

On roster construction, I'm kind of imagining three plausible scenarios.

Scenario A is the run-it-back. Sallis gets a second round grade and comes back for more money and more development opportunity. His draft feedback is that he's a bit small and lacks playmaking / PG ability, so he returns to officially play PG. We add a couple of depth pieces via the portal, including one good frontcourt one. With Sallis at PG, maybe Pfred, Juke or a role player transfer push for a starting spot and Boopie becomes the best sixth man in the ACC.

Scenario B is worst case. Sallis leaves and our top players / starting lineup next year are guys already on the roster or committed. Even if we solve our depth issue, that team (relying on a core of Hildreth, Carr, Reid, Boopie) takes a huge step back. I know some people here think that's a good core to build around, I think those people are delusional.

Scenario C is where we have to rely on more portal magic. Sallis leaves, but we land another big transfer haul, including next year's best player (another lead guard). In a dream scenario, it's out two best players (a la ManMan + LaRavia), but that's probably unrealistic with the guys we have coming back. I think we are pretty good in this scenario as well, since we should have a great cast of role players coming back.

Obviously all of these assume our returning eligibility guys choose to return, but I think that will be the case.
Scenario B is unlikely unless you believe Forbes will completely strike out in the portal.

I would have loved to see Horne on this team. It might have brought another notch out of Boopie and Sallis as well.

While it certainly feels more secure than previous years, it’s still probably a bad assumption given recent history that everyone except Sallis will be back.

Maybe it’s a pessimistic take, but I think it’s more likely that we get at least one out-of-nowhere departure from Reid/Carr/PFred/Boopie/Hildreth than that all 5 are on next year’s team.

In the end game, we need a guy who can drive the ball right into the other team's chest and convert. Maybe Cam will be that guy with a healthy wrist
Cam was able to do that before he got hurt. Assuming he heals well, he should be able to do that again. No question he wants to. That was his game first two years at Wake.

Leggett is so damn good. At least against us. I love him.
I do think if we had a PF capable of guarding Hinson and we could have put Cam on Leggett things would have gone much much better.

Hinson was a horrific matchup for Carr, but unfortunately so was Leggett.

yea, carr is a bit of a tweener on defense. he can't really step out and he can't really bang, so we need to surround him with versatile defenders

Yep. A big wing/modern 4 even off the bench would be huge for this team and add a lot of versatility to the lineups.

ideally, we can get some of that production from Canka and MMM next year. that kind of player shouldn't be too hard to find in the portal.

Keep hoping that's mmm
I think that was the plan. Even Juke has the size to defend a player like Hinson. If he could play minutes at the 4 like Monsanto did, that would be huge.

with no enforceable limitations, feels possible that more people than we expect might hit the portal. but I think that probably goes for every team. chaos will reign!

Good lord. Robert McCray went for 23, 31, 24, and 36 in his last 4 games. Every game but one he was over 50% from the field. What a miss in terms of depth. Maybe he just wanted to have a starting role this year but he stayed and redshirted. Seems like he would have been content to provide some minutes this year from the bench.

A little odd that Whitt is in the portal. He got PT at Furman, but did nothing to draw interest from Power schools. Not sure what he is looking for, but if he wants to be the man, he will have to go low-major.

Looks to me like he saw portal guys brought in over top of him and he decided to move in search of starter minutes. He got them this season.

We'll never have depth if we can't keep guys that we've brought in and develop them. McCray is 6'4. He could have found 15 productive/mins per game this year.
