WFU Hoops: '24-'25 Roster Construction Thread: +Spillers/Biliew/Cosby/Johnson/Abass

If you could choose 2 of the following 5 to return who would they be.

Marsh, Keller, Marion, Clark, Canka

Mine would be Keller and Marion.
Assuming that this offseason goes well in terms of portal additions and retention, the only two that I think could reasonably play a significant role next season are Marion and Marsh. Clark and Canka are complete unknowns, and while I love how hard Keller plays I just don't see it clicking for him in terms of becoming a significant contributor.

If we can retain Carr and Reid and if we can add a third high quality big to next year's team, Marsh is expendable, but that's a lot of ifs and I don't see a reason to chase him off and potentially end up in an even more dire situation in terms of big man depth.

None. If I had to choose two, Marion and Clark because they have the most room to grow.
Harsh, but true.

Sorry you feel that way. I'm curious if that's opinion of many other posters? (have seen @SC DEAC post)

He's a fantastic shooter and played a role in some of Wake's biggest wins of the last 3 years. He's also someone who went from playing a role off the bench this year to not even coming with the team to the ACC tournament -- in which WF played a game it needed to win, and he theoretically could've helped.

That seems to fit the definition of mercurial.
Not harsh, but also true.

Just don't see it with Marsh. He cost them the Pitt game with his lack of aggressiveness. Forbes didn't give him a minute in the 2nd half, after Marsh just aimlessly wandered in the first half.

Marsh looks like a beast, but doesn't have that dog in him. He has played college basketball for three years, and he's the same player. Hard to see that changing at this point. Interesting to me how there such a split an opinion on Marsh as there seem to be so many that still think he can develop. Of the group of five, Marsh has by far the most chances and the results are always the same.

if you choose to define him by the last 2-3 weeks of his career
I mean Monsanto also had a stretch in a previous season where he was getting benched by Forbes for attitude/effort reasons.

The injuries were outside of Monsanto's control and they really sucked. But I don't think that what Conor said about him should be viewed as untrue or misleading. He was a player that had really high highs and really low lows while at Wake, and after giving it some time I imagine most fans will choose to just remember the highs.

Monsanto was my favorite Wake player in years.

And while I don't know the full story of what happened with him this season (dating back to a mysterious setback in the summer), I can't say that I'll be rooting for him elsewhere.

Maybe it's selfish of me, but I'd be fine if he went somewhere outside the ACC and tore it up... But if he transfers to UNC (they inquired about him last year) or somewhere else in the ACC, it would be too painful to see him torch nets all season long.

I think Marion should be a lock here just based on potential. The second one is tough to choose though. Logic says it should be Marsh or Keller, and I think Marsh has a higher floor as a rotational piece just based on his physical attributes so I'd probably choose him. The delusional, and unfortunately dominant, side of me thinks Canka could still be a solid player here and really fills a hole in terms of being a 6'6" wing who can hypothetically provide length and shooting. Fun question though and I'll lock in my answer as Marion and Canka. Doubt that will stand the test of time.

So Kyle's got a spare leg when he needs it.
Did his brother also involuntarily empty his bowels when Kyle did? Does he become incontinent at the sight of tie-dye or exuberant accounting majors? Could be a risk. Just don't know how far this twin connection thing goes.

I don't see it with Marsh either, but I also don't think you chase a 7'1" guy with multiple years of college basketball experience off of a roster unless you are damn sure that you have better options coming in.

To be a pessimist, we don't even know for sure that both Reid and Carr are coming back. But even assuming that they do, we really have nothing on the bench behind them in terms of bigs except for Marsh. And I don't think it's going to be an easy task to recruit a big that is obviously better than Marsh to come off the bench.

I just don't see Marsh as a net positive player. I can't imagine a scenario where WF wins games in 2025 (at least not ACC level games) because he's on the roster. Yes, he's 7-1, but so what? He blocked a total of 4 shots against ACC teams, including the ACCT. If Marsh leaves WF in the off-season, hard to envision thinking: "Geez, WF 2025 season would have been much better if the Deacs had only retained Marsh".

Windy is writing revisionist history on Monsanto. Yeah he was fun. Yeah he was a lights out shooter. But he was high maintenance from the time he stepped on Wake's campus and he and Forbes butted heads multiple times. He had some of the highest highs we have seen as Deac fans and he also caused some serious drama during his years here including the worst timing we could have imagined. Mercurial is the perfect word to describe him and like I said, it's probably the nicest way too.

I'd go with MMM & Clark.

I'm not hoping we lose any of those 5, but Marsh is who he is and Canka is already 22. Keller hasn't shown much, but another year to get stronger couldn't hurt... His shooting gives Forbes the ability to go with a different look from time to time.

Friendly reminder that I'll keep the first post as updated as possible.

Added Monsanto departure just now.
