WFU Hoops: '24-'25 Roster Construction Thread: +Spillers/Biliew/Cosby/Johnson/Abass

The Sallis conundrum is not new. It’s amplified with NIL and the transfer portal, because there is a greater chance to replace a player with a mature player ready to contribute, but Skip had a similar no-win situation when CP3 was mulling the NBA.

Dion Glover basically ended Bobby Cremins’ career by declaring late for the draft after missing a year due to injury (a year in which Cremins did not recruit a point guard, because he thought he had one)

Pretty wild that college basketball is at a point where a feasible situation is a program saying:

"We might be really good next year, but we need everyone to give us $100 to make it happen! Will you help bring our player back to the team, or are you going to let him go to the NBA draft instead?"

It’s not a new concept. College athletics has always been an arms race fueled by folks chipping in. The invoices just go to different vendor pool now.

If folks aren’t ready to admit that the portal comes for us all, I don’t know what to tell ya.

I mean Duke has 6 incoming freshman, including multiple forwards and big men ranked in the top 25. Mitchell is losing his spot more than he is chasing an NIL bag in the transfer portal. Duke had to make scholarship and PT room somehow as only Young and Roach were seniors.

Yeah, but there's a huge difference in asking a few mega donors that have unfettered program access to do it and asking all of your fans to chip in.

Sure, but that’s also always been true. It’s not a surprise that the teams making up the two mega conferences are massive schools and alumni bases.

Roach has another year, should he choose to use it -- I don't expect he will, but also at this time last year thought he was gone.

Today's move puts Duke 2 scholarships over the limit, if everybody with eligibility who could return did so.

I think Mitchell has a lot of ability. Would love to get him, but I imagine he would be looking for a starting spot.

I bet he ends up somewhere as a contender and plays better than the freshmen in Durham.

"Heard from" is such a useless thing. All that means is that a coach has called to check in. Not that there is an offer or even that there is even any real interest on the side of the school.

For a school like Wake, the call could have been as simple as to see if he would be academically eligible at Wake or not before they put any time into considering him.

Does Wake really want a player named Duke? :p
