2024 MLB Season: Paul Skenes to Debut On Saturday (5.11) Against the Cubs

All of this talk of kids pitching is distracting from the fact that the PITTSBURGH PIRATES have the best record / run differential in Major League Baseball.

Raise the Jolly Roger!

so...

I'll check back next year

Again...

For the fifth straight season, Mike Trout will miss extended time. Seems like a great dude, but durability, or lack thereof, is a key skill/weakness.

Surprised the Bucs are bringing him up now, before the Super 2 date or whatever it’s called. But his AAA numbers are absurd. Absolutely no reason to wait.

He doesn't need the four or five more minor league games he would get in the rest of May to show he is ready for "the show."

However, it is surprising the Pirates are essentially giving up a season of starts in the future for around 5 starts this year. Pirates are a small market team and best guess is they lose Skenes when he hits free agency. Why push that ahead a year?

I'm sure this current Cubs lineup will make him look like a future Cy winner.

Skeens will not accrue a full year of service time for this season (unless his finishes top 2 in ROY voting).

I don't know shit but why will he only get 5 starts this year? Is that because he won't start right away?

At this point pitchers with ridiculous velo have such a short shelf-life that you need to get them to the majors as soon as possible because:

  • Why waste any of Skenes starts in the minors
  • If he does need Tommy John, it's better that happens as early as possible
Seems crazy but high-velo starting pitchers are like running backs, there is a finite number of pitches/carries at their peak might as well use them as soon as possible.

Pirates have issues, but in addition to Skenes, 22 year-old Bucs rookie Jared Jones is also a velocity dominant starter and his numbers are also ridiculous:

41 IP 27 H 5 BB 52 Ks (11.4 to 1.5 K/BB ratio) 0.78 WHIP 2.63 ERA -- average FB velo 97.3

what a sad calculation being made for these guys

He’s also really, really good and just looks ready, so why not?
Allow me to introduce you to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Where expectations have gone to die for 45 years.

That said…Saturday, Paul MF Skenes takes the mound! Prepare to raise it!

(And yeah…Jones has electric stuff. Bucs posted a video of every one of his April strikeouts. Absurd!)
