Official Wake- Red Raider Game Thread

A HUGE component of the rebounding is coaching. When we miss a three, everyone just gets back on defense. We don't even try for a rebound. There are teams (like Duke when they're playing a small lineup) that will have 4 guys get back and one guy crashes the boards and will try to tip the ball back to the other 4 if he can't get it himself. We don't even try to do that. That's coaching.

From a purely X and O standpoint the one thing about Bz that bothers me is that we don't attack the offensive glass, especially on perimeter shots. Bugs the heck out of me to see a shot go up and not one Deacon on the screen. I don't understand the reasoning behind it.

I'll ask on a coach's show when I can, or someone can beat me to it if they'd like.

It is unfathomable to me that people believe this team is not better than last year's team.

Happy we got the W.

I feel the same way. It seems impossible, but I think some people are forgetting the ineptitude of last year's team. I literally think last year's team would have lost today by 10, and that TT team was obviously horrible.

Let's review, at the time of Bz's arrival, Air Force had the worst winning percentage of any of the original D1 schools(once that designation was given in the '50s.) That list includes a lot of schools. I'm not convinced they still don't hold that dubious distinction. I recall some seasons when the only wins Air Force had were against D2 schools. You win 50 games at that school in two years, I don't care who recruited the players, you had success there.

What's Air Force done since he left? Nothing

My thoughts:

*We do look better than years past. We have very little talent, but I like what we do on offense and defense when we do it correctly. I don't think there was a "when we do it correctly" under Dino since I didn't think we did anything other than play one on one. Bzz is going to get a few more years no matter what, so deal with it.

*Our players need to stay within themselves:

*TC needs to run the offense at times and try to finish drives, but his court vision and long distance shooting limit his role in the offense. We need another guard on the floor at all times (CJ or Fields) and let them handle the main point responsibilities and lead the breaks. I like his strength and he needs to work on getting inside for points.

*Nikita needs to focus on his shot fake and driving. If there's no one even close, shoot. If there's someone coming out, shot fake, drive, and finish or dish. 0-3 from 3 is not good.

*Carson needs to man the fuck up ASAP. Unfortunately, we have no one who will battle him during practice to get him in game mode. Hopefully Devin will come in next year and push him around hard.

*Chase is better than JTT. Better passer, knows when to shoot and when to pass, and has a good handle. He's going to be so solid for us. 2 assists, 0 TO's today. 1-4 shooting, but none of his shots were bad takes.

*Fields and Green need to continue to play their game and give us minutes. They played 20+ minutes, only turned it over once, and did some good things. Don't force anything.

*Travis and CJ need to continue to run the show. This will be their team for the future.

Completely on point. I'd add that Nikita has to get over whatever mental barrier he has in his head about layups, and knock 'em down. He has certain skills that get him into position to make a shot, then he doesn't make the shot. Kind of maddening to watch.

He wasn't successful at Air Force?

There's no comparison between the two. Bz inherited a good Air Force team and had a nice regular season but lost in the first round of the tourney.

BCG went from 6-24 to 24-8 his first two seasons at UTEP. He then took Texas A&M to the Sweet 16. He's been a conference coach of the year 3 times at 3 different schools. There's absolutely no comparison. Bz has gotten less goodwill to work with because he's done less to deserve it.

That said, this year's team is absolutely better than last year's team despite being less talented. That's a plus for Bz. What I really want to see this year - that did not happen last year - is for the team to improve over the course of the season. If we do I think we have the potential to be decent (and by that I mean a bubble team) next year with the seasoned guys mixing in with the young talent we have coming in. However, it still remains to be seen if that will happen.

I am not comparing the two coaches. You said Bz was never successful as a head coach. I thought that was a harsh characterization.

Agree with all of this

With the emergence of Baylor and Texas being good, he'll never be better than third in that state. We'll see if he can do it again.

You've given him infinitely more opportunity than you ever gavew [Redacted].

As to this year's team versus last. Our offense moves the ball much, much better. The problem is we are also smaller.

You can't make Nikita and Carson into decent interior defensive players by willing it to be so. The reality neither is or will be.

Blaming that on the coach is silly.

Haha...where did I say anything about our coaching?

I agree that Texas Tech will probably be no better than 3rd in the state due to their inherent disadvantages (I spent 15 years of my life in Texas and I still don't know where the hell Lubbock is), but they are such a distant 4th that Texas Tech fans (I am definitely not one of them) would be pretty happy about that.

I am not comparing the two coaches. You said Bz was never successful as a head coach. I thought that was a harsh characterization.

Our athletic director has said he considers postseason success to set the bar. I'm doing the same. Bz has never won an NCAA tournament game in his career. It is still absolutely unfathomable to me that someone who has never done so could become the head basketball coach at Wake Forest.

If the B12 survives, Gillefspie will be happy to keep them on the bubble as long as he's there.

So you don't think he was successful at Air Force. That's all I was asking.

Bz won a playoff game for Denver though.

Not really sure how this turned into yet another [Redacted] thread (probably because Bzzinners assume any positive comment about another coach/hire is meant to slight [Redacted]), but this post is so off base.

2006-2007 23-7 (10-6)
2005-2006 24-5 (12-4)
2004-2005 18-11 (9-5)
2003-2004 22-5 (12-2)
2002-2003 11-15 (2-11)

So looking at the records (and the rosters), it's pretty damn clear that [Redacted] was handed a program that had been built up into something special by Joe Scott and Chris Mooney and did pretty well with it (not mindbogglingly well though). Good for him, but I just don't get how bzzinners can give [Redacted] so much credit for Air Force and then apply the opposite logic to his stint at Colorado.

If the B12 survives, Gillefspie will be happy to keep them on the bubble as long as he's there.

Probably. And he will have done a pretty good job if he can do that.

He says a lot of critical things about Bz.

I take back what I said, I can think of 2 BzzInners. jaybone and KVegas.

By the way TT has signed ONE player for next year.....an undersized 2* SG

TT only has only 1 SR on the roster this season and 9 FR. Not much can be done on the recruiting front unless some players transfer out.

Happy we got the W.

Couldn't agree more. The difference is night and day. Some people have very short memories. There were many times last year we couldn't even break token 3/4 pressure to start our motion or our offensive sets. I cringed every time we brought the ball up the floor which makes for an extremely long season. This team may be short on talent, but they have a clue compared to last year's team.
