Official Wake- Red Raider Game Thread

Again, instead of being historically bad, we're just very bad. The fact remains without last year's team as a comparison, people would be very disappointed with this team.

This year we're probably something like 3-13 bad as opposed to 1-15 bad. So I guess that's something.

My thoughts:

*We do look better than years past. We have very little talent, but I like what we do on offense and defense when we do it correctly. I don't think there was a "when we do it correctly" under Dino since I didn't think we did anything other than play one on one. Bzz is going to get a few more years no matter what, so deal with it.

*Our players need to stay within themselves:

*TC needs to run the offense at times and try to finish drives, but his court vision and long distance shooting limit his role in the offense. We need another guard on the floor at all times (CJ or Fields) and let them handle the main point responsibilities and lead the breaks. I like his strength and he needs to work on getting inside for points.

*Nikita needs to focus on his shot fake and driving. If there's no one even close, shoot. If there's someone coming out, shot fake, drive, and finish or dish. 0-3 from 3 is not good.

*Carson needs to man the fuck up ASAP. Unfortunately, we have no one who will battle him during practice to get him in game mode. Hopefully Devin will come in next year and push him around hard.

*Chase is better than JTT. Better passer, knows when to shoot and when to pass, and has a good handle. He's going to be so solid for us. 2 assists, 0 TO's today. 1-4 shooting, but none of his shots were bad takes.

*Fields and Green need to continue to play their game and give us minutes. They played 20+ minutes, only turned it over once, and did some good things. Don't force anything.

*Travis and CJ need to continue to run the show. This will be their team for the future.

You really think we have very little talent? Other good schools wanted these guys.

Well of course people would be, but last year happened and you can't just throw it out the window.

I think it is more lack of numbers in talent. Lack of scholarship players.

You can't make any evaluations of the talent level because the coaching is so bad.

I don't buy that at all. Regardless of their "star" listing in high school, IMO, here's what their stars should've been in hindsight:

Carson, no better than a two star player at this point. Despite reported strength increases, he's still slow to react to anything going on around him. Slow getting to loose balls, fumbling too many rebounds, very limited offensive game at this point.

Daniel, he's a two star talent with a five star heart from early indications. We need him to defend, board, and threaten to be a shot-blocker. He's trying to give us that but has no offensive game to speak of.

Nikita, a three star talent with a zero star feel for the game. Essentially a two star player. What things he does well he messes up by the things he does poorly. I'm shocked he could be in his 5th year with so little feel for the game, and ability to finish at the rim. A disappointment.

Chase, a three star talent with a five star heart. Solid fundamentals and feel for the game, but will never break you down off the dribble. A little of a defensive liability.

Anthony, a three star talent with excellent speed, but not a great shooter. A pure PG but not a scoring one. I don't know if we'll ever know how good he could really be if CMM turns out to be as advertised.

TC is a 2 star PG with certain three star characteristics, ie, works hard on defense, can get to the rim, and now finishes much better. Doubt he'll ever overcome his shooting deficiency. So, he's a little short, doesn't shoot well, still turns it over too much. If he's your starting PG, count on disappointment in league play.

CJ is a three star player with an excellent feel for the game. Not a great athlete, would probably be the first guard off the bench on a top team. Gotta love his heart, his composure, and his ability to shoot. Still, if CJ starts for you, you won't win championships.

Travis is a four star player who hasn't reached his ceiling yet. Is a pure 3 having to play some minutes at the four d/t our frontcourt limitations. Is developing a jump shot to go with his scoring ability in the lane.

Enough has been said about Ty in the past, but he's got no talent and an even worse head for the game. 7'0 can get you some blocked shots, and occasional rebounds but this is most overrated player coming from high school I can recall.

So really, despite any star ratings these guys may have had in high school, you have a team that is, collectively, still young and short on talent.

The program has lost of lot of talent and bodies over the past three years, too much for a school like Wake to overcome on short order. You've got to like the reports on the incoming class next year, and until our coaches have a chance to work with a complete roster, it's completely unfair to say that Buzz isn't a good coach.

I see improvement in TC, Travis, CJ, and even a little in Nikita despite his general cluelessness. the ball movement is the best it's been in decades(despite the Arizona State debacle,) and our defensive scheme looks good.

Get of Buzz's back and let him do his job. And ChrisL, this post has nothing to do with the football program or any of it's coaches.

Good post! Chalk up the ASU debacle to no legs. Green gets too few minutes (like his potential), so we are essentially playing 7 guys. Tough game against Dayton the night before, you could see in the first 5 minutes they had no legs. Shots were all short. Thought they would bounce back better, but it is early in the season.

Nice win today. Plenty of mistakes, but some solid stretches too.

I see we're back to lapping Bzzz's testes tea simply because our team didn't look like a monkey trying to fuck a football for one night.

Didn't we just go through this 2 nights ago?

You realize we are playing with 8 guys? Green hardly plays and can't score. Fields play well for a freshman, nice vision, but not sure he has scored yet. In reality it is closer to 7 guys.

Try playing an intramural season with 7 guys. Not easy. Now try D-1, then the ACC.

If you PM me your address, I'll send you a Duke jersey, free. Would you prefer Plumlee or Plumlee?

I don't really see anyone lapping his testes. It's more that people have less tolerance for attacks on the coaching on a day where we won, and we looked competent.

X, don't bother, LK is never wrong......even though you are 100% coreect and no one has acted as LK alleges.

Agreed. I'm surprised no one's mentioned that yet - warm bodies alone would be great for this team.

It gets mentioned a couple of times a page. You're joking right?

We defeated a dysfunctional team by nine points. A team whose coach NEVER left his seat nor called a timeout the entire game because he apparently wanted to prove a point. Don't care whether Gillespie was hung over, mad or both.

I'm happy with a win but I wouldn't infer much regarding our program given that TT obviously has serious issues given their coach's actions today.

Oh, we still looked like a monkey trying to fuck a football.

We won. I am happy for a day. Tomorrow will come soon enough.
