NBA offseason thread

If I'm CP, Demps or Kupchak I'm furious. And the owners are freaking idiotic... they've been complaining about Gasol to the Lakers forever and now him and Odom aren't good enough to trade?

The NBA literally cannot let CP be traded now until the Hornets are bought, so Stern might cause NO to lose CP for nothing.

Exactly. Now the Lakers will have to go get Howard, and CP will rot another year in NO waiting for FA. I can't imagine how he feels right now.

All the other NBA owners must be snickering right now and patting each other on the back. They totally just bullied Stern and it worked.

Our own @Chris_Broussard on SportsCenter: Chris Paul fuming and exploring legal options w/NBPA director Billy Hunter to fight blocked deal

Also, Carl Landry was traded while the NBA owned to Hornets. WHERE'S THE OUTRAGE???

Evidently Chris Paul is seeking legal action as he should. Unfortunately for him he has an incompetent union lead in Billy Hunter.

You aren't alone in your assessment....

For those asking, the way this will work with Chris Paul is: On July 1, he'll opt out and sign a five-year, $100M deal with the Lakers.

He can't sign that 100 million deal without already being on the Lakers roster (or another new roster) when he opts out, so that his new team can exercise his Bird rights. meaning he needs a trade this season for the max money he can get from a new team. This trade veto will cost CP millions on his next deal unless he stays in NO long term (because they obviously have his Bird rights currently). He has a serious case if he wants to sue.

This was about how the contract situation was going to play out after the trade but before it got cancelled. So he was talking about what Chris would do if traded to the Lakers

Bingo.

I think this ends with the Lakers sweetening the pot a bit and the trade happening.

What a shitshow. On the one hand, owners should be mad. I mean there's nothing they can do about it, but these small and mid market teams can't do dick these days. The same 4-6 teams are going to compete for the title each year with one or two non-giants making some noise. On the other hand, you can't fuck over CP3 because he wants to play in LA, and it's not his fault there's nothing they can give you in return that equals his value.

This needs to happen so the Hornets can fold, move to Seattle and sell the Hornets name back to Charlotte.
