Best thing to happen to the Carolina Panthers?

Cam has been stellar...absolutely stellar. The one concern I have if I'm Carolina is how many hits this guy takes. Dude is getting crunched on some of these runs.

6'5" 240. Take that and compare it to the size of most LBs and CBs in the league. He is faster than about 80% (if not more) DLs in the league.

His size certainly helps, but still...will guys like Newton have 10 year careers when they're as much a running back as they are a quarterback?

Yea. If Newton being the size of a TE makes him play more like a TE and less like a QB, then he's going to have a TE's attrition rate to match. Same goes for Tebow. True, he's a tank for a QB, but if he insists on taking head-on hits from DTs and LBs, then he's going to break down like a running back or TE.

2010 Mike Vick thought so, until he met 2011 Mike Vick.

Kudos to Cam for all the hard work he put into being a pro QB during the lockout. He was a knucklehead at UF, then JUCO, then in an offense at Auburn that was far from pro-style, then a terrible showing on the Gruden QB special. SMH at the pick. He got the playbook right after the draft, and went to his agency's QB camp in Florida, and really worked hard. I think as he learns the game better, he'll run more judiciously. Hats off to him. The Panthers have found their Marino.

Ouch. He'll be better than Marino. He'll definitely make more Super Bowls.

He'll be a great running QB for a few years then just like others before him rely more on his pocket game as he gets older. I'm not worried about his longevity.

Maybe its just me but after watching Cam all season he runs WAY less than i expected. Given how much he runs compared to his size i dont really see him staying healthy as a problem unless its a freak knee injury like Bradys. Dudes going to be a boss for a while in the league.

I didn't think he ran much yesterday. And when he did he ducked and fell down instead of taking the big hit. Just got 5 yards and went down. Didn't really fight for yards til the 49 yard TD run.

I think Cam has done a great job all year of going down before contact. I think people see his stats on the ground and just assume that he's getting hit during these runs, when in fact he's getting out of bounds or diving before he gets touched.

True.

Ouch? There's a whole lot of room to still be great if he isn't. I hope he'll be better and go to more SB's, too. His teammates will have more to say about that, though. What I meant by the Marino compliment is that both are QB's who were red hot rookies, future HOF'ers, and the face of the franchise for 10+ years. Heck, the media often referred to the Dolphins like they were a backup band - "Dan Marino and the Miami Dolphins." I think Cam will get the treatment.

And to the anonymous neg repper, thank you for the lovely Christmas gift. Here's a Princess Bride quote for you:

WESTLEY
(considers this, then)
Thank you, but no -- whatever
happens to us, I want him to live
a long life alone with his
cowardice.

Cameron avoids a lot of big hits already. Several times this year I've seen broken plays where he will dive to the ground instead of taking big hits only to gain a yard or two. So not only is he more durable than a smaller guy like Vick, he clearly understands the importance of long term health and durability.

You shut your whore mouth. Marino was such a good QB that he made one of the best coaches of all time make mistakes. Marino never had a good enough team around him because Shula was so confident in his ability to throw in any situation. Also, if Marino had played when the rules existed as they do today, he would have thrown for about 10,000 yards in a season. I'm not denying Cam's talent, but Marino is in a class with just a handful of other players.

Peter King on Cam:

Cam Newton is on his way to the best rookie season ever. By any player.

Many of us were skeptical of Cam Newton's ability to transition to the pro game so quickly, and without a full offseason program. But he's done a fabulous job in all ways of adjusting to the NFL. His confidence is off the charts for a young player. His hatred of losing, as I've written about before, is surprising for such a young player; after a loss, he's nearly inconsolable, even by respected opponents. He's more accurate in a complicated offense than anyone had a right to expect. And though he clearly wants to establish himself as a strong pocket passer with awareness to see the whole field, he knows when to take off too. And the results have been strong since the Panthers, on Thanksgiving Day, stood 2-8. Carolina is 4-1 since then (thanks, Bucs), and here are Newton's numbers: eight touchdown passes, two picks, five rushing touchdowns, 60 percent passing.

He already owns the rookie record for passing yards (3,893), and, obviously, will be the first rookie to pass for 4,000 with 107 yards against the Saints next week. Newton passed Payton Manning's record with his 478th throw Saturday; Manning threw 575 passes as a rookie in 1998. Newton's rushed for more touchdowns, 14, than any quarterback in any season ever. The NFL mark for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback is 43, by Steve Young ... and Newton's a third of the way there already.

Listen to these strong words from owner Jerry Richardson to me the other day: "As far as I'm concerned, he'll be the last quarterback we ever draft high in my lifetime. He is a very unusual young man, and I say that in a highly complimentary way. He does not complain. Ever. He's never in the trainers room. You watch him get hit out there and you think, 'He got to be hurting,' and then you see he's never with the trainers. The way he has adapted to our team and to the NFL has been tremendous. We couldn't be happier.''

GM Marty Hurney said before the draft that in order to compete in a quarterback-strong division, the Panthers had to take a quarterback and develop him quickly. He could never have imagined this. Who could? The most amazing thing is Newton having seven weeks of pro coaching before the real games began, and having a season like this one. Imagine when he has an offseason to work on the things he needs to improve. Which, from watching him, is not much.

They showed Cam on the videoboard last night at the Bobcats game sitting courtside wearing a throwback Charlotte Hornets hat. He easily got the loudest cheer of the night, with a (mostly) standing ovation. It was pretty ridiculous.

It would go a long way towards bringing fans back to Charlotte is they could get the Hornets name back.

My interest in the NBA had been waning for several years, but the death blow was the day the hornets left Charlotte.

I'm still in major recovery from that. I try hard with the Bobcats but it's just not the same. Didn't help that Bob Johnson made every single mistake possible as the owner. From naming the team after himself to making sure no one could watch the first season on tv
