The Official OGBoards Running (and Cycling) Thread: (Insert Season Here)

Just found this thread and I haven't read the whole thing...

Is anyone doing the Myrtle Beach half 2/18?
What about the Tobacco Trail half in Cary in mid-March? I am doing both...

I am not happy right now as I just came down with a cold and cough... I did the Krispy Kreme Challenge last Saturday and then did 13 on Sunday on the Tobacco Trail route. It was cold and wet and I got sick the next day...

I'm in for Tobacco Road full. Have fun in Myrtle! I hear it's a good course.

Obviously getting to a race on time is in everyone's plan, but when I ran Cooper River a few years ago, my friend and I got to downtown Charleston in what we thought was plenty of time to take the shuttle bus over to the start, but it took forever and we were too late to get into our corral. I mean we were behind walkers with strollers. So much weaving.

So - give yourself bunches of extra time to get to the start, especially if you're taking the bus from downtown.

I think this has happened to me at least once:

@io - haha, I know that feeling! I nearly cut my run short yesterday morning when my Garmin died after like 7.5 miles. So much dependence on my technology.

I've been holed up with Norovirus for a few days...never thought I'd look forward to a 19 mile run, but I'm really excited about my long run this weekend after missing out on all of my weekly mileage since Sunday.

what are the symptoms of norovirus? if this is a stomach problem, i would strongly suggest you not try to do 19 miles this weekend...

Damn was it cold this morning. Ended up running my three scheduled miles on a treadmill at the Rush. Luckily I didn't hate running inside as much as I remembered.

RTQ, in response to your dailymile comment: I saw 2 other people all morning. One walker and one runner (both on Country Club). Not a soul when I was near Buena Vista.

Although I was in that area around 5 to 5:30 am so maybe a bit early still.

Definitely a stomach problem. It's what most people probably call "stomach flu" or "stomach bug", but it's particularly nasty in NC right now. The bad part only lasted 24 hours (all day Tuesday), but there's a 3 day period after the symptoms are gone of being highly contagious, so I'm stuck in the house for the rest of the week.

Thanks for the advice! I'll probably run 5 miles loops rather than an out and back so that I can cut things short if needed. But I feel 100% today. May even try to run a quick 3 to gauge how I'm doing.

As long as you are hydrating, I would think you would be fine. I'd probably do the same thing.

i got a 24 hour stomach bug last year, maybe in march? felt fine the next day. went to work and everything. held up just fine all day. went to the Y and hopped on the treadmill, with the theory that it'd be good to always stay close to a bathroom while i was still unsure if my body could handle it. made it less than a mile (random sidenote, it is a LOT farther than i ever would have thought between the treadmills at the dowd and the women's locker room). the next day, i ran from home. only planned to do 3 miles. couldn't even make it 1.5. had to walk home.

if you couldn't keep down food, your energy is probably low, even if your stomach isn't actually bothering you. 5 mile loops are fine, but seriously, if you aren't feeling good at the start of a loop, don't try to push through it. realize that you're recovering from an illness. it doesn't mean that your training has hit a wall and you'll never be ready for your race. it means that your body is still recovering from what it went through. take it really, REALLY easy.

I was sucking down Nuun and water all day on Tuesday/Wednesday.

Yeah, probably still a bit early then. I usually see the most people in BV between 5:45-6:15.

good luck captainawesome! can't wait to hear how it goes!

i missed a whole week with some really serious back pain, then caught a cold this week and missed my longest mid-week run because of that. long run this morning made me feel so, so out of shape.

Ran six today hungover as dick. I feel like a champion.

Of course my feet are cramping like woah though.

Anyone else training for MCM? It would be good to have a Boards training partner to check in with on training progress. Takers?

I'll likely be running it unless I get into NYC. Just got a walking boot off, but I can't start running for another 4 weeks.
