Why not just go ahead and drop down to coaching high school? It's on about the same level as the fake USC basketball.

I really need to bring back the ScoopReff parody !

I would take Martin in a heartbeat. Don't bring up his shady recruiting. Bzz is just as likely to get us on probabtion (APR).

Rumor is he's looking to leave K State because he doesn't get along with John Currie.

Columbia's not a bad town at all. There are far worse places to settle down and live on one's uber-comfortable salary than Columbia, SC.

I'm fine with USC taking Martin; that just leaves Marshall free for us when our to-be-formed search committee contacts him in April 2013.

Do you think we'll be able to afford him?

No you wouldn't unless it was Manhatten, NY. Columbia ain't the best place in the world but certainly better than Manhatten, KS except possibly in August.

Manhattan, KS is actually a very nice small town - I visited there with a friend of mine who grew up there and went to KState. Also, I'd rather have the KState job, as that athletic department has shown time and again that they don't care how the coaches do it, as long as they win.

Everyone says Marshall is a jerk / asshole / butt pirate, but I'd like to know exactly how and to whom. There's a difference between being arrogant and pompous and maybe not getting along with a school's administration and athletic department on the one hand, and being all of those things to players, recruits, families, fans, boosters, and alumni on the other. I tend to think it's the former, and that ADs aren't high on him because they don't want to hire someone who is going to be strongwilled and assertive and possibly rub them the wrong way. A quick example that comes to mind is Mike Leach; ADs have turned away from him for many reasons (until WSU nabbed him), and one main reason was that he was apparently awkward and standoffish toward big-money boosters and alumni in fundraising and PR events. I tend to think that sort of thing would be far more harmful on the football side, though.

Honestly, after the [Redacted] debacle, perhaps our AD would benefit from having someone around like Marshall instead of [Redacted] (his old golfing buddy doubling as a lapdog).

i've never been to manhattan, ks (or manhatten for that matter), but i seriously doubt it's that much worse than columbia, sc no matter what month it is.

The AD at Kansas St and Martin don't see eye to eye per my a KSU alum neighbor of mine.

Would never want Martin. Would take Marshall long before I'd take Martin. Martin appears like he's constantly 1" away from hitting/choking 1 of his players, a ref, a journalist, opposing coach or opposing player. Makes Bobby Knight look sane.

That said, and I've never been to Manhattan KA, but Milhouse has the correct take on Columbia SC.

There is really no evidence that Martin has been shady at Kansas State, other than that he worked for Huggy-Bear. He actually doesn't recruit very well at all there. He might have done some fishy stuff in Miami coaching high school, although I don't believe there is conclusive evidence he knew about it (still doesn't look good for him).

He's a very good coach, but Wake would never hire him anyway.

Also, for reasons outlined elsewhere, we should be able to hire to pay a basketball coach $1.8mm per year, especially if Dino's contract comes off the books this year (if he takes the Duquense job).

Recent Marshall article

Looks like South Carolina won't pay him the big bucks (we can't right now either). Also, isn't Marshall a total ass? Is that his reputation?

The real sticking point is that Marshall wanted no less than a 7 year iron clad deal and the folks in Columbia said no way. They were willing to go for 5 but not 7 and I don't blame them at all. What happens if Marshall can't get it done in Cola? The you have Darrin Horn all over again after year 4 or 5 and you're paying to get rid of a coach once again. The downside is that deep down I think Marshall still wants the job but wants to be loved by Eric Hyman (SC AD) and the love is not being shown back. I think the Martin angle is a good one for USC to take. After all he took KSU to an elite 8 just 2 years ago.

As far as Columbia goes, it not a bad town at all and is only 90 minutes from the beach. Find me a beach anywhere near Kansas.

"there is a beach 90 minutes away" is hardly a good reason to live in a shithole like columbia.

I think that's a pretty fair take on both USC's thinking and on Marshall's.

I don't think those bashing Columbia have probably spent much time in Kansas at all, much less Manhattan.
