Basketball Recruiting Megathread 1.0 has run its course

We need to get rid of Buzz so out new coach can start recruiting 2015 F Luke Maye. Seriously. The kid was the best player for Hough High this year...as a 6'6" freshman.

BTW - this is Mark Maye's son. Very good kid. All conference (4A) as a freshman.

Saw him at the CC a couple weeks ago. Thought he was a rising senior who just go invited out of pity when I first saw him. Then he stepped out and started making some plays. Was really surprised to see he was a freshman when I looked it up. Plays like a Wisconsin player.

He played travel ball off and on with my son until about a year ago. He's a beast. Hard to believe he's 14 (or just turned 15).

My son's AAU club has played Luke's team last year in early season play and then in states. He beat us both games. We finally beat them in the national semi-final in Orlando last year. He is the real deal. His dad is also one of the nicest people you will ever meet. We lost the final to a killer team from New Orlean

ESPNU has updated theit 2012 rankings and Cmm is 79th and that is it for us. Our class seems overhyped if Telep et al is right about their talent level.

CMM - #14 PG
Moto - #30 SF
Tree - #45 SF
Devin - #36 PF
Cav - #38 PF
Washington - #45 C

The pressure Bz has on these guys is just unrealistic.

Moto, Tree and Thomas have me excited about our wing or forward play - increased athleticism when combined with McKie.

I long for the days when we had Tucker/King/Rodney/Tree Owens and could actually push some people around and intimidate the other team some with our athleticism. Of those 4, Rodney was #7 overall and McD's all american, but I do not think the other guys were top 100. Maybe Tucker was. I think the other guys were basically 3* or top 100-200. BUT, they turned out to be damn good.

Please let that happen again.

p.s. After watching Rodney do the 2-handed reverse jam over Shawn Bradley in the Glaxo tournament and then how he THREW DOWN a few jams in the McD's game, #7 was a little low for him. He looked top 3-4 that year to me - awesome program altering type recruit. Ahhhh the old days.

The class is "good" because it has a lot of players in it, not because it has any blue-chip prospects. I *think* most of us here appreciate that, though sometimes I'm not so sure.

Isn't some of the hype based on the fact that other trusted analysts have rated some of these guys much higher?

I don't know why but it seems like ESPN has consistently rated our recruits lower than other services...

I'm sure I sound like a broken record, but this is an average recruiting class for Wake Forest. It has lots of players in it though.

The class Bz inherited had more top level talent and was stronger overrall.

I mean, this is clearly true as far as recruiting rankings go, but I'm doubtful about this. The 2010 class turned out to be unique in its abject failure to live up to rankings. No one could have predicted the JTT flameout, Melvin Tabb's idiocy, Chennault's horrible PG skills, or Carson's... pussiness. All of these players had "talent" to some extent, but they also had critical flaws that made that talent worthless to us. Carson, for instance, was a 7'0" big with a nice touch and flair for passing. I can see why he was rated highly in high school. Nevertheless, his inability to deal with contact made him pretty frustrating to watch.

2010, pound-for-pound is far inferior, talent-wise, to 2012, as well. Our 2010 class is still stronger, but it's just worth putting out that we may have some diamonds in the rough because this is a much deeper class, particularly for big men.

I hear you guys regarding trying to directly compare 2010 to 2012... but I just have a hard time getting pumped over this class when it seems average when objectively compared to other Wake recruiting classes of the past decade.

I also think I'm just frustrated with Bz hyping himself for the first thing he's done (recruiting the 2012 class) at a mediocre level.

Nobody was talking about how the 2010 class was overrated at this time two years ago either.

Oh, definitely. The point is well taken.

But saying this current class is less talented/ good overall than a 2010 class that is a known failed quantity strikes me as wrong.

JTT and Carson (and even Tony I guess) could still have good college careers. We'll see what happens if they get better instruction/motivation.
