A 6 year old girl was throwing a super tantrum which led to police being called. The police followed standard protocol when transporting anyone in a cruiser and put the girl in handcuffs. The parents are now outraged.

The officer's police report says Johnson began tearing items off the school principal's office walls and was throwing furniture. The report says Johnson knocked over a shelf that injured the principal.

Johnson also was reportedly biting a doorknob and attempting to break a glass frame while jumping on top of a paper shredder.

"She has mood swings some days, which all of us had mood swings some days," Johnson's mother Constance Ruff told WMAZ. "I guess that was just one of her bad days."

I can understand the school calling the police for fear of liability if they attempted to restrain the girl considering how bad the tantrum apparently was. The girl was never actually placed in a jail cell or anything and will not be prosecuted because of her age. The parents' reaction that this kind of tantrum is ok just amazes me.

As for the use of cuffs, it does seem a bit crazy for a 6 year old but I can also see the concern that she may continue the tantrum on the back of the cruiser and potentially hurt herself if not cuffed. Overall, I'm not really sure how I feel about this. Maybe some changes should be made for how to deal with people this young and officers trained for this scenario but I also don't think anyone with the police department needs to be fired or suspended.

Facepalm. They should have tied up her feet too and tossed her in the back of the cruiser. This girl is going to grow up to be a gem, let me tell you.

I don't really see a problem with what they did. Are they supposed to just let her tear the place apart? If not, then without cuffs to restrain her they would physically have to manhandle her, which would probably end up being an even bigger deal.

This is ridiculous there is no one in that school that can handle a six year old girls tantrums? Somehow I have a feeling juvie doesnt fall under the parameters of least restrictive environment.

One of my friends works for a private company that is contracted out to do counseling for mentally unstable kids in elementary schools. Basically, he sits in the class with a couple of wild ass kids and waits for them to do shit like this. They have approved holds that they can put the kids in to restrain them and can be fired if one of the kids accuses them of being too rough. I'd say putting her in handcuffs was a smart move on the school and the cops part.

Putting her in cuffs did more to protect her safety than anything else. I have zero problem with it.

And her parents are actually outraged? How about being embarrassed that you're raising this little shit.

Seems like a good idea to cuff her. If she was to the point she was tearing stuff off the wall, she probably wasn't going to sit still in the back of a police car.

The school should be able to handle the tantrum but the principal can't be excited about dealing with her for the next 5 years. And it can't be reassuring to know that the mom isn't going to do anything to fix it at home.

Was it legit metal handcuffs, or just the zip-tie kind? It appears she deserved to be cuffed and stuffed, but hopefully they went for the less painful cuffs.

However, Johnson's parents are trying to organize a community protest against the officer's actions, including reported plans to contact civil rights activist and MSNBC host Al Sharpton.

God damn it...... Of course it's about race....

typically kids dont just flip out and tear everything up. they handled this in the worst possible way from a standpoint of preventing future tantrums. That kid got so much attention for what she did they basically rewarded her behavior.

I started to compose a post on this thread. No need. Here it is.

I want to agree with this because if it were me I would have just locked this little shit in a closet or something. But in today's climate, I don't see what their alternative was.

Yeah, 0 problem with cuffing and hope they had the foresight to have used the zip-ties. I have some friends who are cops, and they complain a ton about the limitations placed upon them these days, much of which sounds pretty silly. But the local depts around here are now uber concerned about being as politically correct as possible and being as by the book as possible. It's the smart way to run a dept these days, especially given this is the age where anything can suddenly appear on video, and more especially considering some of the shite I've heard about in the old days.
