Game Notes and Depth Chart (Aug. 23) Released

Those are most definitely intriguing. We knew Sherm would start once TD got hurt. I hope TD can make it back for UNC somehow.

Also ---- our tight ends are a walk on backed up by a (fairly recently) defensive lineman. We ran Garcia and Pineda through the TE position and then Vogelsang grabbed the 2-deep spot.

Tyler Hayworth OL and Tylor Harris DE will play (apparently) as True Frosh.

Our backup noseguard is 250 and he was TE, then DE, now NG. Crazy how small that D is. This is like old school Army/Navy.

Kinal could be a key to our season if he can crush some punts. He could be fun to watch.

BSD article here

Kinal beats out Wulfeck. Sherman grabs outside starting spot. J-Roc listed as first team.

Those were the things that stuck out to me.

Kinal could also be a key to our season (bad) if he flubs some punts and could be painful to watch. Here's to hoping your scenario plays out. Most likely he will do both and be exciting to watch one way or the other.

In the first four rounds of the NFL draft last year, no LB weighed under 231. Of the fourteen picked, only three were under 240.

LBs at 220-230 are small. Our DL is even smaller. We could get manhandled by bigger OLs.

RJ posting on college football makes me giggle.

I am no football expert either, but I have been following our 2-deep for 7 or so years now, and this 2-deep prior to game 1 has more surprises than any in those years. In most years, it is a guy clearly better than the dude in front of him, but lacking the experience (e.g., Josh Harris v. Josh Adams) and it takes like 6 weeks for the depth chart to reflect that.

Unusual for so many position changes to immediately result in a 2-deep spot. The only other comparison are years where that happens at one position due to injury. This is due to injury combined with lack of depth at several positions, not one. I do like playing Tylor Harris right away for a couple of reasons. One being he might leave after 4-years for the NFL draft whether he redshirts his frosh year or not. The other being if an early season injury happens in one of these years, you can redshirt then ...

Our defense is going to be good this year. The question is going to be are they a group that can put pressure on the QB and cause turnovers. Because we are going to need turnovers this year.

USC is #1 in the AP poll. Their starting LB corps:

Dion Bailey: 6-1 210
Lamar Dawson 6-2 235
Hayes Pullard 6-1 235

Wake Forest:

Zach Allen 6-2 240
Justin Jackson 6-1 220
Mike Olson 6-3 230
Riley Haynes 6-1 220

WF is bigger at LB than USC. Guess that means WF has more NFL prospects at that spot.

LOL at rjkiper tag. Kudos to you sir.

Also, Kinal will at least give us a cool storyline even if he does mess up a couple times. And he's a monster compared to Wulfeck/assuredly is a better athlete, so a fake (dare I say it under Grobe) could be more effective.

I'm looking forward to the matchup with the Army Midshipmen [sic].

This. Not worried about size at LB. I'm worried about speed, ability to tackle in space, coverage ability, and if they can effectively provide the 4 or 5 man rush in support of a small DL.

Another interesting tidbit. Okoro and Ehrmann lead the team in career starts and neither are slated to start.

Tyler Hayworth, true frosh (I think) RG on the two deep is very interesting as well.

Yes. I can't believe this he was the only kid out there that looked like he was about to collapse during gassers. He looked to be out of shape pretty bad.

Nah I knew that KJ redshirted when he sat out, just had in my head that AJ came in and redshirted right out of the gate. Appreciate the info though, Looks like you guys will be LOADED on D next season and pretty damn good this year.

This is why I expect us to be good this year and scary next year

Im sure it has to do with the talent of our younger guys simply being that much better. I hope

Seen that Kinal was starting during the scrimmage. Him and Wulfeck avg. about the same yardage but he has much better hang time. He seemed better at pinning inside the 20 he did shank one out of bounds badly

Tylor Harris might be that pass rusher we need on 3rd downs in particular

Well we know Okoro is pretty bad and the younger CBs are pretty good. Ehrmann has promise but the young guys have more.

And, from what we've been told, he simply cannot put on weight.

LBs are getting smaller to for coverage purpose. With the spread becoming widely used, speed is more of a prerequisite than size. That's why more safeties are becoming linebackers and more corners becoming safeties.

If you are playing a 3-4, you'd better have some quick, agile linebackers. Allen, Jackson, and Ehrmann are fast for linebackers...and we need for them to be. A couple seasons ago our linebackers had difficulty running down plays on the edges. That should not be a problem this season. We are big in the middle and quick on the outside. Good combination.

Our starting LBs are 220, 220. 230, 240. The 240 is decent sized. The others are the same size or smaller than we had in the 70s.

Justin Jackson is 6'1 - 231 OLB / 4.49 40 yards / 385-400 BP/ focused. Stud.

Zachary "Ziggy" Allen -- 6'2.5 and 242 pounds - has won start job /4.55 40 yards/Sky "Po"

Joey Ehrman -- 6'4-225 -- RS SR. with big plays in his career / 4.55 40/5th year leader

Brandon Chubb -- 5'11.5 and 241 pounds / 4.65 -- long bodied kid plays 6'2-- nose for ball. RS Frosh hard to keep sidelined

Riley Haynes -- slimmed down from 235 to 222 on 6'1 frame. Instincts,brains combined with 4.68 40 speed -- 5th year*

Scott Betros -- big frame kid at 6'1.5 and 244 -- great reads/navigates/ex-Florida #33 overall has skills -- 5th year*

Mike Olson - 6'3-245 - powerful, athletic, has some freakishness to go along with true LB intensity.Star

Teddy Matthews 6'3-225 -- wave of future -100 plus tackles as SR/ Floridian is upper tier ATH

Kevis Jones 6'2 - 220 -- jack of all...like Sherman Ragland/ high school do-everything guy /4.5 speed-legit

This ain't RJ's "grand-mammas" Cadillac

These mofuggies are big,bad and arrive with foul breath. Look for some serious "reel" from this group. Hard hitting and action packed footage, bitches!

Our defense is tiny. It looks like the size of 60s/70s sized D.

We'll be okay. I just have a hunch. And we'll be crazy good on D next year. But this group is going to get it done this season. All eyes are, as usual, on the Oline.
