We are heading to secession from the NCAA

And you're thinking Reffly. If there's a scenario, let's see it.

UVa and GT go to the Big Ten much like MD left. Big XII poaches FSU and Clemson along with Boise State and Louisville to get to 16. PAC-12 stays pat. ND stays Independent.

ACC has 4 pre-expansion teams left (Big Four) and is mostly former Big East and CUSA schools and has to meet certain criteria to get an auto bid into the new postseason.

You are ignoring VT in that scenario. I also don't see UVA leaving without FSU-Clemson making a move. UNC is not getting shut out.

Are you guys fucking kidding? The ACC corpse is being picked clean as we speak. The only teams left will be us and the other small time losers.

Maybe we can join the Patriot League with a bunch of other middle tier private schools that have strong soccer and field hockey traditions.

The Big XII "exit fee" includes the provision that the conference retains all television rights to the team that leaves for the length of their current TV deal - translation, the Big XII ain't going anywhere.

And they don't have Maryland, so it's probably going to be enforceable.

UNC is the crown jewel of the ACC. The SEC or the B1G would take them tomorrow. I can't imagine both aren't already talking with them.

My guess is that they turned down the B1G already.

OK, so in all candor, are we now witnessing the end of amateur athletics (at least in fb & bb)? Corporate terminology is increasingly becoming more commonplace. Universities now talk about their "brand", their "product" ... It seems only a matter of time before all those pesky rules designed to safeguard the concept of Student-Athletes will be swept aside in favor of the almighty dollar. I think universities, from the top down, are now traitors to their very mission of developing student-athletes (witness the UNC debacle, for one). It makes me sick. I'm about done with it. I hope you are too. And yet, the sad reality is I'll probably get negrepped for espousing this view. It's just supposed to be students playing a game, folks. For the pride of their school, and nothing else.

You might want to check how many teams there are in the Big XII currently, plus you have the SEC at 14 and the PAC-12 at 12. That's not even addressing UVA moving independently of VPI, and we all know how that goes.

The challenge still stands. There is no plausible scenario in which the PAC-12, SEC, B1G, and Big 12 all go to 16 teams.

The ACC just lost Maryland, and market-wise they'll be easy to replace (UConn, L'ville offer new markets where Md overlapped UVa and VT).

The Big XII has already lost better schools than they brought in.

Someone tell me why the Pac12/ACC Network didn't happen?

The smart play would be to go big now. Don't just replace Maryland.

As an old grad who remained in NC mainly because of Wake and the ACC, I sadly find I am in agreement with you booradly. Hope you all saw the Arms race on college football 60 minute report And USA Today’s featured article.. College football coaches continue to see salary explosion Coaches’ pay has even outpaced the pay of corporate executives, who have drawn the ire of Congress and the public because of their staggering compensation packages. Between 2007 and 2011, CEO pay — including salary, stock option value, bonuses and other pay — rose 23%, according to Equilar, an executive compensation data firm. In that same period, coaches’ pay increased 44%.

You're thinking regionally. Anyway, the most likely worst case scenario is that we get poached and become the new Big East with a tenuous spot in the new configuration.

I don't think it will be 4 conferences with 16 teams. That was Reff.

I explained what I thought was more likely than what Reff said. I think there will be 4 power conferences we'll be left out of the big money and guarantees like the Big East. I explained how that could happen. Do you agree or disagree?

No clue. That would have been huge. Swofford's loyalty to ESPN and Raycom is baffling. If he had some balls, he could have gotten ahead of the game. Instead we were left waiting for leftovers. We could have gotten the ACC prime real estate in CA households. Even with only ACC and PAC-12 states, that is a nice footprint.

Thanks for posting this. I did not see the program, but it doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

Actually, I posted that, "There is no plausible scenario in which the PAC-12, SEC, B1G, and Big 12 all go to 16 teams, unless you think they're going to be inviting the likes of Wyoming and SDSU." You quoted and took issue with that post, responding with what was at best condescension and at worst an insult in "You're thinking regionally." Now you're trying to change what was clearly and indisputably the premise of my post and your response. Is that because, A. You're backpedaling because you know you're wrong, B. You didn't actually bother to read my post before responding and misinterpreted it, or C. You were being a prick for no reason? Answer me that and I'll get to your question.

One thing is absolutely certain: If the ACC implodes we will end up at the Div. II level, or thereabouts. Take a look at the Nate Silver column today on the NY Times website analyzing the Maryland/Rutgers move to the B1G, and in particular, click on the link in that column to his analysis of the actual fan following of all BCS conference teams, which gives you an idea of their TV appeal.

Guess what? Wake Forest has the smallest fan following nationally of ANY team in a BCS conference. We bring nothing to the table for any major college conference. We are paying the price for decades of generally mediocre basketball (no Final Four trip in half a century) -- a sport in which we could and should have done much better than we did -- and less-than-mediocre football.

And maybe as a small private school with a tiny alumni base located in a small market, we should just stop the charade of trying to compete with big state universities in football and get into a mid-major league where we can play at our level in basketball. Of course, that would still require getting a decent coach.
