Sorry to hear about the demise of Francis Fulghum, Class of 1950. He was a team mate of Gene Hooks, Charlie Teague, Moe Bauer, et al. I was still in high school in '50, but, like nearly everybody else, followed the Baseball Deacs in the sports pages of Raleigh's News and Observer. The story I...

Over at GoDeacs.com, they're running a game-by-game summary of the 1955 Championship season, this being the 65th anniversary of that event. Great reading! I was there for most of the home games, and, in Summer School, I recall, we were all glued to the radio broadcasts on WFDD as the Deacs...

    Wake Baseball 2020

It's all about pitching. Bottom of the 5th, with the score at 4 - 2, we were into a pitching duel. At that point, after walking two and striking out three in the 4th inning, Menendez was relieved, having thrown 77 pitches. The reliever, Tyler Witt immediately gives up a HR to the first batter...

    Wake Baseball 2020

Score after 6 innings: 4 - 10, Coastal. We used three relievers in that inning. McNamee and Myers were ineffective. Hearn faced two batters and got them out. I'm giving up on this one...

We win it 9 - 0. Sacred Heart gets one hit on a ball Lanzili nearly caught. A well-played game.

    Wake Baseball 2020

App State scored 9 runs in the last 4 innings against our 'improved' pitching. Second verse, same as the first; a little bit louder, and a little bit worse. Walter's a pee poor coach and needs to go.

    Wake Baseball 2020

Through 4 innings, Menendez gives up one hit and one earned run. Score is 6 - 2, good guys. In the 5th inning, Walter leaves Menendez in the game while the first two batters get hits and the third batter walks to load the bases. Next batter doubles in two runs. A passed ball gets the next run...

Understand this was a "predetermined" arrangement. Think Walter got himself outmaneuvered.

Game suspended after five innings, due to rain, with the Deacs leading by a score of 6 - 2. Will be completed at a later date.

    Arnold Palmer & Buddy Worsham

There's a little bit about the accident, and what Jim Weaver had to say about the two victims during the Monday-morning Chapel service, in the 1951 Howler.

You are right, scooter. looked it up on Google. Roommate, Gene Scheer, was killed in the one-car accident with Worsham. BTW, I was still in HS when this accident occurred. Always thought Worsham was alone.

    Arnold Palmer & Buddy Worsham

Worsham was returning to Campus and driving alone. I've always suspected that, since it was late at night, he simply got a little drowsy while driving along that hazardous road. That's all that would have been necessary.

That's true. Most dances (Homecoming, Midwinters, et al) were held 16 miles away in Raleigh's Memorial Auditorium. This Homecoming was held 28 miles away in Durham. Between Raleigh and Wake Forest, Highway 1 was an easy drive. Between Wake Forest and Durham, Highway 98, winding along the...

    Arnold Palmer & Buddy Worsham

Old Highway 98, between Durham and Wake Forest, was a dark, curvy, hilly road which was quite hazardous after dark. In the late 50's, the road was greatly improved. It remained two lanes, but the lanes were wider, with many of the curves removed, and the steep hills and valleys greatly...
