1989 NCS - WAKE on ESPC now !

I was hoping we would win it this time.

Announcers undoubtedly meant that this was Wake's last game using GSO Colosseum as their home court, since the Joel would be available the next year.

Formatting sucks but I'll let that be your problem to deal with.

For the kids out there that missed these glory days, this game was proof that Staak was doomed to always make the wrong choice. In 87, facing the same situation up 3 with seconds on the game clock, he elected to not foul the shooter and gave up a 3. Same scenario, different tactics, same end result.

Glad some of you enjoyed my quasi play by play. Was surfing, found the game in progress and got caught up in the action. Know little of the era as I was pre-Wake back then. Seems showing this game was part of Jimmy V week on that channel....they picked a dandy for sure.

One bit of trivia perhaps....nobody on either team fouled-out until the final 30-35 secs of the 4OT....refs let'em play for the most part. We had a big white kid at C who's name I didn't catch - anyone ? Again, would love to see a boxscore.

Good nite....

EDIT: thanks for the box DH !

Hondo you must be referring to big Ralph Kitley?

I remember that game (and the '87 game) way too well.

The Joel opened for business on 11/11/89- the same date of my wedding to the beautiful Mrs. Mo!

Yes, I chose to attend my wedding rather than the opening night at the Joel. Poor planning on my part but on the bright side I've never forgotten my anniversary!

Maybe the black ribbons were for Gene Overby? He died in March 1989...not sure of the date of this game.

Nevermind...looks like this game was early March 1989 and he died at the end of March 1989.

Watched the game with my girlfriend (future wife) at her house. We planned to go eat after the game. She got very hungry. Wake lost. I was upset. Not a good evening. I remember it well.

Remember there was slushy melting snow in the parking lot and my socks got soaking wet walking into the game and things went downhill from there. Actually, I was an eternal optimist at that age and I was thrilled with Chris king's game and convinced we were going make the tourney the next year.

They were for Bob Staak's liver.

Announcers saying this could be the last ACC game in Greensboro....???? Anyone recall what that was about ?

They were probably referring to the Joel opening up the following November, so Wake no longer had to play their ACC games in Greensboro.

Ugg....up 3 with .09 left....State inbounds, races up court, state throws up a deep 3 and is fouled with .02 left.

Kid makes the first, intentionally throws up a brick on the second, bounces toward the corner where a state kid throws up an off balance heave and it goes in at the horn.

In OT....77 ALL.

Jimmy V was a pretty quirky guy and didn't really do a lot of X and O stuff. He did prepare for special situations though and he says this was one of the things he had his team work on from time to time. After repeatedly seeing where missed FTs rebounded to, he decided that the ideal way was to hit the board just right of the rim, have the rim carom it to the corner and have someone race to the area where the ball should be. He later said that he never thought it would work but it was the best way he could think of to come up with a quick shot off a missed FT.

As it turned out, the shooter hit the board exactly where he was supposed to, the ball caromed toward the corner and the State player chased it down and fired it in, just like they practiced it. I watched that game from start to finish and couldn't believe we couldn't pull it out. I specifically recall the heckler coming down to the scorer's table and giving it to Staak, and Staak giving it right back. Does anyone old enough to know, know who the heckler was?

Okay, I was at this game. My father and I, in the only Wake bb game we attended together, dropped my stepmother off at Hanes Mall before the game. We were to pick her up after the game. I'm very sad to say that after the third overtime, my father made us leave, because it was the era before cell phones and we were already late. So I never saw the 4th overtime.

I was hoping we would win it this time.

Robert Siler had some serious hops....have not seen any Wake players who could match him getting above the rim

What a bullshit thread title. I just put on ESPNC hoping to see this and it's football, Oklahoma at OkieState, 2004. Want my money back.

I was sitting directly behind Wake's bench and the heckler you mention sat just a couple seats down from us. He was screaming at Staak after the game. Jimmy V had walked all the way down to our bench to shake Staak's hand and I remember both he and Staak yelling back at whoever the heckler was.
Of course the game should never have gone into OT but Robert Siler had a chance to put it away I believe in one of the early OTs with a mid court steal but was impeded by a ref if memory serves correctly.

Sorry 94....after the game my feed had a tribute to Valvano followed by his famous never give up speech at that award ceremony followed by a Muhammed Ali-Zora Foley boxing match.

Back to the game....interesting how broadcasting has evolved/improved over the years. During the action the announcers went several posessions before saying what the dang score was. Same for showing a score/clock insert on the screen....several times found myself yelling at the tube " WHAT'S THE SCORE " and " HOW MUCH TIME IS LEFT ". Also, never once saw the announcers nor did they identify themselves. State was ranked 20th at the time but each teams W/L record was not shown nor announced throughout. Wake pep band sported snazzy gold vests and black bow ties !

Thanks to all for filling in the memories....

421 -

Looked like he got tripped-up by a state kid around mid-court.

Was it Jeff [Redacted]?

The box score indicates we won by 2 in regulation -- too late to protest?
