2012 Spring Game

No returns were allowed on special teams, but punter Alex Kinal had a standout performance with a 49.8 yard kicking average to go with a long of 64 yards. Newman converted his only field goal attempt and added one extra point.

"I think we've got a couple kickers and a couple punters that we can win with," said Grobe. "I think that's been our problem for a while now, we really haven't had a very consistent kicking and punting game from the specialists and I think we've got the potential to have that this fall."

It's been 'a problem', but it hasn't been 'our problem'.

Dont get excited. The rules of the scrimmage were no returns. The 64 yard punt was a low line drive that was off to the right so the return man gave a half hearted attempt as it scooted past him into the end zone. The first punt that went 45yards was also a low line drive that was caught and would have likely been returned for very good yardage. Kinals net yardage would have been pitiful if returns were allowed.

Yeah i'm sure they knew that. All of the punts, Wulfek included, were low screamers. Punting game was pretty much to push the offense back as far as possible to see more O vs D

I don't think the staff would have minded seeing some good hang time 45 yarders that would have been fair catches under normal circumstances.

Kinal's punting form is very unusual and he doesn't always catch the ball cleanly or hit it off the same place on his foot. He has a lot of work left to do.

a little more talk of how the offensive and defensive lines looked would be appreciated.

Even though he missed the attempt, the backup kicker seemed to have a lot of pop on his FG.

Yes, he put up some really good numbers at the end of the season. IIRC he had a really strong outing against Vandy.

Punting a football isn't like splitting an atom, but it's less likely for someone to get off a good punt, with both distance and hangtime, while running. Try running up to a golf ball and hitting it. Other than Happy Gilmore, I don't know anyone else who can do this effectively.

Tough to tell because the white team was so stacked in the trenches. It was tough based on how the teams were drafted to get a good feel.

Our 2nd string d-line can't get past our 1st string o-line, and our 1st string d-line can just blow right by our 2nd string o-line, so take from that what you will...

Interested in observations regarding Sousa. Is he a contender for the #2 QB position?

From just news and the spring game, probably his by default come August. None of the backups really made a lasting impression. However, Sousa looked mobile and fast and had it not been 1 hand touch on the QBs, he likely would have had 50+ yards rushing. Also, it didn't appear he was tucking and running too quickly. He dropped back, watched his line get torched, and then took off. He was looking downfield though, so I think that was positive.

Thanks. I am excited to have QB with his size and mobility. But it won't help much unless he is a passing threat. On the other hand, if that develops...

Also, Ragland didn't look great in routes or actually catching, although it sounds as though yesterday may have been an off game for him, he appeared to be a great WR blocker. I saw him put a couple guys on their asses. The walk-on WR had a nice game, too.

Was the line that Sousa watched get torched the first string line?

Also, if you're going to rep me for being "completely wrong," feel free to tell me in which post.

Edit: I see it was for the back-up QB post. All the back-ups were terrible. Grobe even said it's wide open after the game. From my view, it was Sousa because of his feet.
