Time for some douchey food talk. City of Decline and the Town of Incline held out of the awards this year. However, I have been to Peche in Nolya twice, so psyched to see that get lotsa props. Also been to Slanted Door in SF and Pizzeria Mozza in LA somewhat recently.

Would defs like to check out Poole's Diner in Raleigh and Blackberry Farms in TN, but I have no good reason to go to either of those places.

NOMNOM.

Glad to see Ashley Christensen get the win.

Glad to see Highlands Bar and Grill, Birmingham, in the best restaurant list. Fabulous place to drink and eat.

Some thoughts on some of these places, mostly in SF:

Best New Restaurant
Coqueta - pretty good and some sick jamon, but not outstanding

Outstanding Bar Program
Bar Agricole - they have great drinks here, yes; food's good, too

Outstanding Pastry Chef
Belinda Leong, b. patisserie - really great traditional european pastries; lacks soul, though

Outstanding Restaurant
The Slanted Door - This is a head-scratcher. I mean, it's very good, but one of the more overrated spots in all of SF.

Outstanding Restaurateur
Barbara Lynch, Barbara Lynch Gruppo, Boston, Massachusetts (No. 9 Park, Menton, B&G Oysters, and others) - Good. Well deserved.

Outstanding Service
Quince - The Quince/Cotogna group is awesome

Outstanding Wine Program
A16 - Love A16.
Bar Boulud, NYC - Love Bar Boulud.

Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic
Vikram Sunderam, Rasika - Good for Raskia

Best Chef: Northwest
Ethan Stowell, Staple & Fancy - Had a good meal here

Best Chef: NYC
April Bloomfield, The Spotted Pig - Huzzah. She's done good things at Tosca in SF, too

slanted door was a head scratcher to me as well.

Blackbird in Chicago is great.

Sam Calagione is a beer genius and understands where Craft can go more than anyone else, not shocked.

Need to check out FIG

Poole's diner is really good - small, unassuming place - you would think it was nothing special (or worse) from the outside. I am probably not enough of a foodie to really appreciate it - but the food was definitely different and innovative. Menu changes daily and appears on a chalk board.

Chef Sunderam from Rasika is really deserving. It's consistently one of the best restaurants in the city, and after having eaten in most of the good places in town (multiple times for most), it's still the one I always come back to.

Surprised to see Amis beat out Laurel in Philly, but the Vetri love is justified.

Also, JBF is a really great resource if you're traveling to a random city and value non-crowdsourced food recs. That's served me well in trips to Denver and Seattle over the past year.

love Poole's! i'm also a big fan of Ashley Christensen's other Raleigh restaurants-- Chuck's (the BEST burgers & alcoholic milkshakes), Beasley's Chicken & Honey (yummy brunch and southern food), Joule's (her coffee shop), and Fox Liquor Bar (craft cocktails in a speak-easy type environment).

Surprised to see Amis beat out Laurel in Philly, but the Vetri love is justified.

In terms of Vetri, eh, it was an awesome meal, like really fucking good, but with 4 people, it ends up being like $1200 - and I can go to a ton of places that are somewhat close to that meal for much less than half of the cost.

Laurel is solid, Amis is good, but the atmosphere is a bit loud - tough to talk at anything larger than a 2-top.

Stephen Starr deserves to be on the Restaurateur list - Talulas Garden/Talulas Table/Serpico are all fantastic, El Vez/Alma de Cuba/Buddakan/Parc/Frankfurt Hall are solid gotos - he is a driving force behind Phillys foodie movement.

slanted door was a head scratcher to me as well.

Eh, Restaurant of the Year is usually given to a well established place, not a hot or inventive up and comer. Its more like a lifetime achievement award.

If you look at the last 4-5 winners of this award (Blue Hill/NYC, Boulevard/SF, Eleven Madison Park/NYC, Minibar/DC), they were all places that have been open 8-10 years before they received the award.

Slanted Door might not be the coolest spot in SFO anymore, but its been putting out quality work for a good long while now.

I still haven't eaten at the main Vetri spot, only the pizza place in Fairmount that is absurdly good.

We also haven't been able to get Laurel reservations yet. Guess you gotta do the Open Table 3 months ahead of time just after midnight thing.

I also think Kevin Sbraga and Jose Garces deserve love. Every Garces spot is fantastic.
