2015 FB Recruiting: Mr. South Carolina Matt Colburn signs with #theawakening!

Early playing time trumps any concerns about the QB when recruiting WRs. Calvin Johnson and Demaryius Thomas committed to GT, and they have never been able to throw the ball. On the list of factors that WR recruits consider, their evaluation of QB talent is not very high on the list.

Both recruited under Chan Gailey though.

Yep. And Johnson committed knowing Reggie Ball was the confirmed starter after a promising true freshman year (before it was crystal clear that Ball sucked).

Sterling Johnson committed to Clemson. That guy stole my "Porn Name".

meh. when i saw him at the playoff game last year he wasn't even dressed to play

It doesn't have to do with him playing for the Panthers. It has to do with the fact that young Looney is going to transfer (and sit out a year) to be closer to older Looney, when there is always a decent chance that he won't actually be playing for the 49ers in a season or two. And it would be really ironic if he somehow ended up playing for the NFL team that is only an hour and a half from Wake.

He is an update to the TE Board, including a major development on the Jake Bargas front.

Big Board TEs

Jake Bargas
3-star recruit from Boca Raton, FL. The first thing that stood out to me was the offer date reported on 247 (January 10th). If that date is accurate, he was likely one of the very first offers that Clawson made for 2015 recruits. BCS offers are Wake, Duke, Kentucky, and Boston College. Duke probably leads right now. Latest word was that Ohio State was stepping up their interest level. He said in a March interview that Wake’s staff was “all over (him)” in terms of the amount of attention. Interesting note: Bargas decommitted from Michigan where he was an early lacrosse commit. He has since confirmed that he is giving up on lacrosse to focus on football.
5/15 Update – He announced his final 3 schools as Wake Forest, Duke and Georgetown. He is obviously making academics a priority. He had been picking up offers at a pretty good rate since the last update (Louisville on April 23 and then Illinois just a few days ago). He plans to make a decision by the end of June and will make the trip to visit Wake Forest before then. I think that visit is significant because he has not been on campus yet. He was over-the-top enthusiastic about his previous visit to Duke (March 8 for Duke’s Junior Day which was conveniently held on the same weekend as the Duke-UNC game) and Duke has held a solid lead in his recruitment ever since.

Chris Cunningham
Unranked recruit from Jacksonville, FL. Wake offered on February 22nd. Other BCS offers are Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Mississippi State, Purdue, Virginia Tech and Oregon State. In a March interview he said that Wake Forest was one of 3 schools “recruiting him the hardest” (Purdue and Louisville were the others).
5/15 Update – Cunningham made an unofficial visit to Wake Forest on April 18 and said that he loved it and wants to come back for another visit. He also said that he wants to watch the Deacs this season to see how successful the new staff’s offense will be against ACC-level competition. He took an unofficial visit to Virginia Tech the next day. He has since added offers from Virginia and Rutgers. A Maryland website ranks him #9 on their wish list of offensive players that haven’t committed yet. His best friend since childhood is a WR that has also been offered by Maryland, possibly in a move for a package deal. He was offered by UNC a while ago, but the offer hadn’t been listed on the recruiting sites until recently. He is planning unofficial visits to UNC, Louisville and Kentucky. The Maryland guys think this one will come down to the Terps and Hokies.

Cunningham is sort of a TE/WR hybrid type player that is capable of creating mismatches by stretching the field with speed. While not the typical height for a TE, he is supposed to be strong player and a capable blocker.

Removed from the Big Board

Jalen Harris
3-star recruit from Montgomery, AL. BCS offers are Wake Forest, Cal, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisville and Mississippi State. My impression is that he wants to go to Auburn but doesn’t have an offer yet. He has visited Auburn unofficially over 10 times.
5/15 Update – He added offers from Nebraska and Miami. This is a tough recruitment to get a good read on, but based on some recent articles I suspect that he is mainly focused on Miami, Cal, Mississippi State and Kentucky. I am going to be remove him from the Board for now.

One to Watch

Caleb Reams (Gurnee, IL) committed to Western Michigan in March but since then he has been offered by Illinois and Wake Forest. I don’t have any sense on whether he is looking to open things back up.

One additional note on the Jake Bargas recruitment. I think this will be an important test for the new staff. It is going to be a tough road for Wake football if we can't consistently beat Duke on the recruiting front and I think that they have more momentum in recruiting than many people realize.

Players like Bargas that are heavily focused on academics are players that I think that we NEED to land.

I know you said he wants to put Lacrosse aside but I wonder if he is thinking 2 sports at Duke.
