2020 Democratic Presidential Nominees

No. It's not just about ideas.

There's a woman on the local Invisible Facebook page who is killing a thread complaining about why Warren isn't getting more traction. She did a great job explaining what Pete is doing right and how it stands out in the field. Here are some of her posts:

Eh. I see a lot of Walter Fisher and Ted Patrick allusions but between the narrative paradigm and deprogramming rhetoric I'm not sold that this is a radically new approach to politics.

ADT and Ph were just waiting for the right white savior, I guess? Seriously, this is just an awful series of posts. I hope OGB is archiving these somewhere.

Now this post right here is hilarious. Sorry for trying to give you a legitimate answer. You're no better than the M&M Bros

I wish the Bernie supporters had something to offer besides just tearing down other candidates.

I'm just giving y'all your stuff back at you. I have listed my preferred candidates more than a few times on here. You'll note that that Bernard Sanders is not currently in my top-3. Neither is Pete Buttigieg or Beto O'Rourke.

Right. So it’s weird that you aren’t talking up Gillibrand. She’s your top pick, right? What’s she up to? How is she doing? Any good lines from her stump speech? Is she gaining momentum? If not, why not? Talk her up. Don’t just tear others down.

"tearing down" doing a lot of rhetorical work

pretty sure there's only two actual Bernie Bros on here: MDMH and MHB, no?

Ph, I care about as much about this stage of the 2020 general election as I do about The Real Housewives of Orange County. It's all just reality TV, pandering to irrational hope and Trump angst. Rhetoric doesn't mean anything, especially at this stage.

I listed my preferred candidates and explained why I had changed from Harris as #1 to Buttigieg. Don't know how that's any different than you.

I can't quote for some reason, but you wrote this:

This is a valid point and I don't really have a great response other than I just want the best candidate to win and currently I think that candidate is Buttigieg. I have made it clear in the past that I was a huge Kamala Harris stan, and she's still probably my #2. I have just felt a sense of sincerity and genuineness that from Buttigieg that is either not present in some candidates (Beto, Klobuchar) or only somewhat present on certain issues (Booker on mass incarceration, for example). When he speaks, I feel like he wants to be President not because he wants to take down Trump or because it's the most prestigious job in the world, but because he truly believes that he can make a positive difference in America and in the world if given the chance. I'm sure all candidates feel that way to some degree, but I have not heard anyone else speak and make it come across in those words like Buttigieg. The resume is just a bonus on top of that point.

So, you're into him because he has a sense of sincerity and genuineness?

I don't care if the next Democratic presidential candidate is a woman, man, black, white, Asian, Hispanic, LGBT, straight, whatever. I want someone that wants to be President for the right reasons and that can defeat Trump. I think Buttigieg hits both of those marks.

I don't care if you're black, white, green, purple...

I like the candidates that I like because they demonstrate mastery over policy, have track records of supporting issues that I care about, and have committed to continuing to govern according to those principles as POTUS. I see a big difference between those two justifications. You're basically saying that the reason that you want to vote for him is that he's charismatic.

The only thing that matters at this point is beating Trump before he destroys our country. You'll have to live longer with consequences of putting positional purity over beating Trump than I.

Who is talking about purity, RJ?

I'll vote for Buttigieg if he gets the nomination (just a reminder that I and the other so called Bernie Bros all did this with Clinton), but I sure as hell won't vote for him in the primary. Hell, I'd vote for Gillibrand, Warren, Sanders, Harris, and possibly Hickenlooper over Buttigieg.

The most charismatic candidate has won every election in my lifetime. It's clearer than ever that your votes for Senate and the House are votes about policy. Your votes about President are about whether or not your votes for Senate and House will matter. The President doesn't write policy. Obama didn't even write "Obamacare." But the President sells policy to the people. The President can help whip votes. Obviously the President can veto.

Very strong words. Sad. So what do you like about Gillibrand and Harris? I haven't heard you talk much about them.

How much of charisma is retroactively defined by who won? If Trump had lost, no one would have called him charismatic; they'd have called him stupid and abrasive. If Obama had lost, people would be calling him aloof.

Love that we've moved on to charisma being the most important quality in a candidate. yeesh.

PH wants people to do something other than tear down other candidates, so I'll offer a couple things.

Bernie recently reversed course and said he would support the reparations bill. I have no way of knowing how much DSA played a part in this, but the DSA Afrosocialists and POC caucus had written an open letter on this issue. Also, he hired Briahna Joy Gray as press secretary, and I imagine she had some influence.

Also, Bernie said that states should restore voting rights to all incarcerated people. Most other countries guarantee voting rights to incarcerated people.
