With the first AP Poll and the KP ratings released for the 2023-4 season, it's time to roll out the MBB college basketball thread.

The initial AP Poll for this season:

Is that dude’s name really po’ boy like the sandwich? I really like the tidbit below about how he has 5 other siblings with totally normal names.

King is one of six siblings – Lillian, Jessica, Ronnie, Sammy, and Dorian.

MBB college basketball rule changes for 2023-4:

The big rule change for Windy City's Wearables: college player's jerseys can now be any number from 0 to 99. Who is going to be the first "wild and crazy" college basketball player to wear #69?

Notably, Kansas is let off the hook completely for its scandal. Once again, the NCAA slow-played it until everyone forgot about it and then years later issues a decision saying there was no evidence that Kansas did anything wrong. Relatedly, Kansas is pre-season No. 1 this year.

The NCAA is a fraud.

“The Scoop
Multiple sources confirmed the resignation is the result of an investigation into inappropriate behavior. The allegations stemmed from an incident that occurred on the school’s recent foreign tour to Costa Rica. Stags assistant coach Bryan Dougher was also removed from the school’s website this morning, suggesting his involvement in the matter.”

Wild. Must have been partying.

Secret Scrimmage Results from the weekend:

UGA 80 NC State 72
UNC defeated FAU (no score reported, but it sounded like it was not close)
Colorado 87 Texas 78
TCU 85 Bama 81
VCU 79 S. Carolina 77
Arizona State 72 San Diego State 68
Colorado State 87 Minnesota 49

NEC is in trouble. Odd move from MAAC, maybe a hedge in case A-10 adds Iona and Siena (they shouldn't)?

NEC would be down to 7 schools, and two of them are transitioning to D-1 (Stone Hill and LeMoyne). IIRC, a conference does not get an auto bid if there aren't at least 6 teams eligible of the NCAAT, and if Merrimack and Sacred Heart leave, NEC would have only 5. 2023 NEC champ, FDU, won 2 NCAAT games last season.

Who says college basketball is a "guard's game"?

4 centers on the pre-season AP All-american team....

Probably because the NBA has little use for traditional centers; so, those players stay 4 years, or in Bacot' case a couple of decades and collect NIL money...

Kansas at Illinois exhibition just into the 2nd half on the B1G Network. Feels like this Hawkins dude for the Illini has been there forever.

Louisville saga is going to be fun this year. Can't imagine Payne is the coach there next year. Though maybe he can fire Danny Manning and blame him for being inept, buying some more time.

Going to be even funnier if Danny ends up as the interim head coach like he did at Maryland.

By all accounts, Payne is a really good dude and probably a fantastic assistant coach. Head Coach is a totally different beast though and I think it is pretty clear he isn't cut out for it. UofL fans here in Louisville are LIVID and I have a hard time imagining him making it through the season. Manning as interim is entirely possible and will be interesting to see how the natives react to that.
