I'm pretty sure the gray reps are from people who don't have enough posts to give reputation. You need 50 for them to count.

Also, you need to have > 0 rep to be able to give rep.

It doesn't appear that if someone gives you rep while they are below the 50 post minimum, that it will count after they reach 50 posts.

I'm at 27 now. it seems positive rep = +10 and negative rep = -1.

Not sure how I feel about being an example. At least I'm still on a distinguished road!
