Yeah, if retiring to SC, I'd say the coast or Greenville.....

The coast has really gotten too expensive for most folks unless you want to live in Summerville or somewhere a few miles from the coast. Greenville really is a great alternative and as much as I despise the Tigers, Clemson on the whole is a pretty beautiful campus. Plenty of great golf and horse stuff up here as opposed to Aiken, and way more theater, restaurants, and other smaller towns around Greenville (Greer, Fountain Inn, etc.).

Aiken has all the irish travelers just outside of town. With their teenage brides, organizd crime

I can think of a dozen nearby towns off the top of my head that I'd pick over Aiken. In fairness it's been years since I was there last.
