Ask the Pit: Pick me a vacation

Ok Pit, haven't taken vacation in like 5 years. Was going to go earlier this year, but I got stuck in hospital when appendix partially burst and missed my cruise. Luckily I had trip insurance so I can go somewhere now. Where should I go for 4 nights? Going August 19-23rd. Trying to stay under $1000 total, and going by myself.

Was thinking maybe San Diego to go to zoo, aquarium, Petco and beach. Maybe Vegas, but stuff is expensive there, and I'd get bored sitting in casino for 4 days. Any all inclusive places in Caribbean with a casino? Atlantis would be awesome if it wasn't so damn expensive.

Montreal? New Orleans? Portland (Maine or Oregon)? All have plenty to do for someone traveling solo.

Solo, I would want someplace with a night life. Playa del Carmen might be a good option. Or stateside, I would go New Orleans. Night of music, night of bourbon st, night at casino, night with men in leather chaps.

Yeah a bit of exaggeration, but by the time you get there and pay 4 nights lodging his $1k budget is shot.

Judging from the places you're listing, you're not interested in a serious vacation as much as a road trip. Shit, if I couldn't get out of the country once a year I'd go batshitnuts.

i guess it depends on how much he wants to do it up. i'm admittedly very biased because i lived in the DR for a while. but this time of the year (it's hurricane season, so prices are really low right now, and since he's planning this last minute, he can be pretty assured that no random hurricane is going to hit while he's there) is really cheap in the caribbean. it wouldn't be tough to find an all-inclusive for less than $100/night. i'm looking at the prices for a place we used to go, and it's $90 all inclusive. again, depends on how fancy you want to be. this place was neither a dump nor a 5 star hotel, but it was pretty decent, and had really awesome beaches.

Check out Little Corn Island. You can get rooms there for $15 a night. You just need to not have hang ups about mosquitos, iguanas, and no electricity. It's actually a blast.

No mention of hedonism? Once you get there find one of the lunch walkers with sneakers and she'll pay for your company and future trips as well.
