Manhattan has decided to retain coach Steve Masiello and will reinstate him once he completes his undergraduate degree, the school announced Monday.

Masiello will be placed on unpaid leave until he completes his undergraduate degree at Kentucky, Manhattan said in a statement. Associate head coach Matt Grady will serve as interim head coach during Masiello's absence.

According to multiple sources, Masiello is about 10 credits shy and will take classes to finish his degree in the next couple months.

"After an extensive review of the situation and extenuating circumstances, we determined that Mr. Masiello executed poor judgment but did not intentionally misrepresent himself in applying to the college. After participating in graduation ceremonies at the University of Kentucky, he enrolled in summer courses with the intention of completing his degree, but never followed through to make sure that the degree was awarded," Manhattan president Brennan O'Donnell said in the statement.

"We appreciate the counsel of all involved in assessing this complex situation. Our policy was always that the coach must have at least a four-year undergraduate degree. We are confident that Mr. Masiello will be able to complete his degree this summer and return soon thereafter to resume his duties."

Billy Madison: [to Miss Lippy] Whoa whoa whoa, Miss Lippy. The part of the story I don't like is that the little boy gave up looking for Happy after an hour. He didn't put posters up or anything, he just sat on the porch like a goon and waited. That little boy's gotta think 'You got a pet. You got a responsibility.' If your dog gets lost you don't look for an hour then call it quits. You get your ass out there and you find that f#*king dog.

Lol. Didn't intentionally misrepresent? Does anyone in the world believe that this clown didn't know if he graduated?

All over the world, people have their diplomas hanging up in their office. He doesn't. That's intentional.

Yeah, because if you sign up for the classes with the intention of taking them so you can graduate, that's as good as actually completing the classes and graduating. What a total Butthead.

In other words, go finish night-school and we'll give you your six-figure job back when you're done.

For the next five years his buyout should be $0 if he is fired and $1 Billion if he leaves for another team.

All his credits will transfer from Kentucky to Carolina. He could complete his degree in six weeks and not have to leave New York.

Why do you need a college degree to coach? I wouldn't give a damn if the guy didn't have his GED if he wins 25 games a year. It's basketball, people, not physics.

We've been through this. He isn't just coaching basketball. He's coaching basketball at a school. Colleges and universities are asking students to pay thousands of dollars for a degree. It's not a good luck for one of the highest paid employees of that school to not actually have a degree.

So, if the head of university security, who served three tours in Iraq and doesn't have a college degree but is more than capable of doing his job, that's okay and nobody cares (nor should they). But the basketball coach who is not a member of the faculty has to have a college degree? Makes no sense to me.

Dirk. You're now being silly with common sense. Please. Stop!

His courses will be:

KY Derby 101
Horse Fornication 204
Worldwide Wes 315 (4 credits)

Is the head of security one of the highest paid and highest profile employees? There is a difference.

I get where you're coming from, but the Post 9/11 GI Bill does make it possible for that Veteran to go to school, and make him even more qualified for those type of jobs.

Manhattan's administration needs to think about how they'll handle a player getting into academic issues now. Cheating on a test? Blowing off a class? Any of the things that went on at UNC? How do they sit down to discipline a kid going forward with this situation?

I like how they're into the "second chance" thing but Masiello needs to come clean. There is nothing accidental here. No missing paperwork. No unintentional mistake. This was overt, willful, and intentional. So when he has a player fuck up, do they just smile and sweep it under the rug now?
