As an Eagle Scout, the content in the files disgusts me. I never would have imagined it to be so widespread. The LA Times has compiled a database of all the accusations and mapped them out. They've even got the scanned images of the documents, and the description of some of the events are just gut wrenching.

Eagle here as well, so lucky that I had such an awesome Scout Master. This stuff is sickening.
 
Fellow Scout here. I agree its sickening. I actually know some guys in another troop who got abused. Didnt realize it was this widespread
 
This is 100x worse than what went on at Penn State, but since it doesn't involve big money athletics, its getting virtually zero attention.

The claim for covering these things up was to not denigrate the name of the Scouts. As such, now all anyone outside the organization is going to think of when it comes to Scouts is pedophiles.

I've got to disagree with you there. Its been on the national nightly news, my local news, and in today's newspaper locally and nationally.

1st Class scout here- I never made it to Eagle because I discovered girls and scouts was then all over for me!

You've got to wonder just how wide spread pedophilia is. Between the recent (last 5 years or so) Catholic and Boy Scout stories, that's a shitload alone. Even worse, my office deals with child porn all the time - hundreds of cases - and none of them are related to Catholics or Boy Scouts.

When you take these three groups (the recent Catholic scandal, the Boy Scout scandal, and the other pedo court cases every year), you've got to wonder what the fuck is going on. Seriously - if you statistically account for all the "uncaught" pedos, it's got to be something like .1% of the population (about 300,000 people).

What the fuck is wrong with a society that has that many people actively molesting little boys? Let alone the number of people who have the mentality to commit the act, but never take a concrete step in that direction.

Hasn't this always been a part of human society? Accepted in some cultures, obviously not accepted in ours. My guess is that the percentage of people with the impulse has never really changed.
 
I would love to see Eagle Scouts speak up against this like they did over sexual equality. Should be easy to virally organize again.

We had a great group of leaders. One was my 8th grade social studies teacher, another was a Vietnam huey pilot, and the head scoutmaster served in the National Guard. They were great mentors to a lot of boys who grew up without fathers in their lives. I have such great memories of the organization growing up, and it kills me that there are some out there who's opinion is polar opposite because of what they went through. Rightfully so I might add.

...don't mean to sidetrack anything, but really? in what cultures is molesting kids accepted?


As for the whole scandal, it will be interesting to see what the repercussions are. Can a civil suit be brought against the Boy Scouts of America, or is it only going to be dealt with through individual cases against molesters?

I was not a Scout but I was a cub master and assistant scoutmaster for years. We worked hard to get the boys moved toward Eagle before they ran into what we called "P and P". Meaning petroleum and perfume.
