“NFL Network built Thursday into a night for NFL fans,” said Goodell. “Our goal is to bring these games to more fans on broadcast television with unprecedented promotion and visibility for Thursday Night Football on CBS.”

Good move by the NFL to wait until all negotiations were done between cable providers and NFL Network before making this change

Haha. Definitely a #rjtypo.

The Thursday games on the NFL network were not doing as well as the NFL had hoped which meant less ad revenue for them. By selling the rights to these games, the NFL made for those missed dollars plus a lot more.

CBS is the AFC network, but I assume in this package you could have NFC at NFC matchup.

Yeah. The AFC distinction is only Sundays.

That is correct, but the new TV contracts (which start in 2014) for the NFL allow for "cross-flexing", which could see more NFC games end up on CBS and more AFC games end up on FOX. A prime example would have been this year's Week 16, where you had New England/Baltimore as the SNF game, but no real strong game to feature as the 4:25 CBS DH game (Pittsburgh and Green Bay, while name teams, were both around .500). Instead of moving NE/Balt off of SNF into the 4:25pm slot, the NFL could have moved Chicago/Philadelphia or New Orleans/Carolina (two strong FOX games scheduled for 1pm starts) into the 4:25pm slot on CBS, even though they are a part of the NFC package. It previously happened during Week 13 of the 2011 season (Denver at Minnesota aired on FOX).

So, the NFL is going all in on Thurs Night games, you know, the Thurs night games that the majority of players hate because of the short turnaround from their previous game.

Where did he mess up?

The NFL also finally got carriage for the NFL Net, which is where the big dollars come in. With that achieved they can parcel off some of the games

It is not like the Cowboys have been losing free agents for the last couple decades because players have wanted to avoid their one Thursday short week every season. Now everyone has to do it once. No big deal.

This. And it gives everybody at least two Sundays off during the season.
