February 3, 1999

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Ten high school prospects, including one of the nation's premier quarterbacks, have officially accepted football scholarships to Wake Forest by signing a national letter-of-intent today, Demon Deacon head coach Jim Caldwell has announced.

The 1999 freshman class is smaller than normal because the Demon Deacons lost only 10 scholarship seniors from their 1998 squad. The group does, however, include C.J. Leak of Charlotte, one of the country's most sought after prep quarterbacks.

In three years on the high school level, the last two at Independence High, Leak passed for 5,884 yards and 63 touchdowns while throwing only 12 interceptions. He also rushed for 1,425 yards and 36 TDs during his brilliant career. Leak has been named the top quarterback in the South by "Fox Sports" and the nation's 27th- best prospect at any position by "The Sporting News."

"Because we lost so few seniors, we felt that we could be very, very selective with this class," Caldwell said in making the announcement. "It is a small group in numbers, but we feel without question that this class will have the greatest impact on our program of any that we have recruited. This certainly is a quality group of young men who will add ability and character to our squad and help us improve considerably.

The list of Demon Deacon signees follows:

More importantly, Chris Leak has givean a vebal commitment as an 8th grader!!!!

Came in as a freshman with him, the CJ leak hype machine was amazing

Aside from CJ, that was a solid little class.

what happened with cj exactly? just wasn't that good?

Some articles say he dislocated it, others say he tore some ligaments. Clemson was like the 3rd or 4th game of his sophomore year, and he played sparingly his freshman year.

ya and his brother went on to win a national championship at flordia.. if only we got chris instead

Chris wasn't exactly gangbusters at Florida his first few years. There were a lot of other reasons UF won the championship than Chris Leak.

He was a Freshman All-American, and he went 6-3 as a starter in the SEC. They beat LSU that year who went on to win the National Championship.

That's why I don't get to giddy over recruiting rankings and stars. I figure if we ever do land a 5 star or even a high 4 star, they will be a bust, it is the Wake Forest way.Facepalm

Well then fuck me. I feel like i remember him struggling... maybe that's just in comparison to the momentous hype that came with him.

CJ did himself no favors when he transferred to Tennessee. Wearing all that Vol shit around campus before heading off. And his dad was a class-A prick too.

In the year of his signing Jim Caldwell referred to C.J. Leak as "the greatest athlete ever recruited at Wake Forest." A few years later Philip Fulmer observed, "C.J. takes good notes."

Loved Chris Leak, got kind of screwed with Tebow getting all the headlines

If you play sparingly behind Ben Sankey, that should have been a sign
