Clapper: US govt 'under assault' by Trump after Comey firing

Published May 14, 2017 Associated Press
Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper on Sunday described a U.S. government "under assault" after President Donald Trump's controversial decision to fire FBI director James Comey, as lawmakers urged the president to select a new FBI director free of any political stigma.

"I think, in many ways, our institutions are under assault, both externally -- and that's the big news here, is the Russian interference in our election system," Clapper said. "I think as well our institutions are under assault internally."

When he was asked, "Internally, from the president?" Clapper said, "Exactly."

Clapper spoke following Trump's sudden firing of Comey last week, which drew sharp criticism because it came amid the FBI's probe into Russia meddling in the 2016 presidential election and possible ties between Russia and the Trump presidential campaign.

Clapper said America's founding fathers had created three co-equal branches of government with checks and balances, but with Trump as president, that was now "under assault and is eroding."

It's not under assault. If the other two branches wanted to do something, they could. Our system has always been vulnerable to partisanship.

The judicial can't do anything unless someone files a law suit and the legislature won't do anything because Trump is a big R and all they care about is the Party. Maybe assault is the wrong word, but the other branches are limited in their ability or desire to stop it.

If you actually read the article, Clapper contends it's under assault because Trump does not respect the traditions of US democratic institutions and is doing his best to bend them to his personal will.

It's a huge quote when Trump had otherwise been trotting out Clapper's testimony that there "was no collusion." Clapper is explicitly saying Trump is dangerous, there may actually be evidence of collusion, and Trump is trying to undermine it.

Presidential traditions are expected to the extent to which each party is fine with them. Republicans hate tan suits. Democrats hate nepotism.

The judicial branch has to wait to do something about Trump but conservatives in the court ushered him in with their support for voter suppression.

Wait, what?

Which part?

Republicans in Congress aren't going to sanction him by not confirming nominees and such because they don't care about their guy breaking those traditions. If Dems were in control, they would.

Republicans had a fit about Obama's tan suit. And he demurred and retired it.

Democrats don't like the roles Trump's kids are playing (except poor Tiffany).

Now I'm even more confused.

What don't you get?

Isn't Clapper the same person that lied before congress about the NSAs sweeping spying policies over the American people? Doesn't that make him a threat to American institutions?

Not supporting Trump, but Clapper has done as much to damage our way of life than trump has. Dude is a evil bastard.
