How'd that work out for the world? 5 MILLION people left Wuhan before they "locked down two provinces". And by then epidemic had been going on for almost 2 months - we didn't know that then. We made one good move - we cut off travel from China. We did not cut ourselves off from the rest of the world. And Europe did not cut off travel from China. By the time they did many countries were already infected. When the history of this mess is written there will be so much blame to go around it will be insane. But the primary blame will always rest with the place where it originated - the local officials in Wuhan who covered up the extent of what they were experiencing because they feared the central state's response or feared they were creating a panic when none was warranted (oops).

I, for one, would prefer to have clean and water during a viral pandemic.
 
someone please ELI5 why trump isn't using defense production act? i hear chamber of commerce lobbyists are against it but aren't the price controls set at the white house level? so couldn't he in theory produce a bunch of stuff and make his cronies richer? is the issue around the look of socialism (BOO!)? just seems like a no brainer unless i'm totally missing something.

Once he takes on a greater role, he owns the response. If he keeps the federal response low, he can blame other people when things inevitably go horribly.

Of course, a competent response from the federal government is what is needed to help things not go horribly.

Allowing states to bid against each other drives up prices.
 
thanks, both those responses make sense. seem like absurd reasons and obviously he can't say them out loud but explains his hesitance to actually do something with the power he has.

1. Doesn’t want responsibility for quotas and distribution

2. Appearances (NATIONALIZING INDUSTRY!!!)

3. Wants to continue to pat companies on the back so conservatives can say “look, see, corporations step up to the plate in this society to provide for us all!”

4. He has no idea what the Act does, doesn’t spend the time to figure it out, and associates it with socialism

Regardless, he’ll never accept any responsibility for any negative outcome. But that won’t stop him trying to avoid it.
