Does population density have anything to do with these rates? For instance, NYC is approaching 9 million people. The largest city in Florida is Jacksonville (~ 1 million). Florida's population is spread out more evenly across their state along the coasts and through Orlando. In theory they should be able to distance better and keep deaths down. So what is preventing them from doing a better job at it?

(Hopefully angus is not just noticing the expected delay in acquiring the disease and dying and Florida actually learned a few lessons about how to treat sick patients.)
 
IIRC New York also had a larger number of infections simultaneously from the outset which increased the burden on hospitals.
 
I went back and looked at the numbers back in mid-May before DeSantis and conservative media spiked the ball on how great Florida was doing. At that time, NY had 10x as many cases as FL.

That’s also about the time the RNC pulled out of NC to start the process of moving to Jacksonville. By the time of the convention, Florida will probably have the most cases of any state by a considerable margin.

For the record, spiking the ball on deaths is pretty short sighted as well. I doubt FL will reach NY but deaths will keep rising.

And Florida spiking the ball was premature and stupid - I'll also add that Cuomo spiking the ball and lecturing other folks is pretty distasteful as well, given 34,000 deaths in his state

This guy below has been pretty accurate since July 1 predicting what will happen in Florida. He's using Florida-specific CFR and infections by age band.

Testing facilities company, Bio Reference Lab CEO Dr Jon Cohen was on Fast Money with Jim Cramer last night at the 6:00 hour. Cramer called BRL the best Covid testing company in the country. Their turnaround times are 72 hours and the rest of the industry are at a week. They have geared up since March to go from 25,000 tests a day to now 90,000 tests per day plus 1000's of antibody tests per day. Then at the end Cramer asked him about the NFL testing and Cohen announced that BRL has the entire NFL testing contract for all 32 teams and Cramer went crazy! OPK stock jumped over $1.00 today to finish at $5.96 on volume of 114 mm shares traded.

So Angus is right, they are managing it well in FL cuz it is lower than NY!!!!!!
 
Today was 130+ deaths so 130-290 isn’t a tough guess. I’ll check the whole threads in a bit.

Weekly trend of daily new deaths from COVID-19 per 100,000 residents in FL is 9 x that in NY.
