CT 78: the pit ladies' favorite christmas gift to give? blue balls!

I seriously have no idea what to get my dad for Christmas. He is one of those guys that will never wear any clothes that you get him, never uses any stuff you get him, never drink the liquor you get, and always says he doesn't know what he wants. I have gotten him a package of toilet paper for Christmas before and that is probably the best i have ever done. Any suggestions on what to get a 60 year old man for Christmas?

Can you donate to somewhere in his name? Do a Heifer thing? Metamucil?

I'd take a promotion with no salary increase. It might be worth "nothing" right now but you can turn that into major money when you're looking for a new job or going back to school if you're smart.

I'm in this same boat. I have no idea what to get my pops.

alright CT. the time has come for me to do some salary negotiation. give me your tips.

here's the sitch: got a surprise promotion yesterday (went from being a "specialist" type role on 2 accounts, to completely owning and managing 5 accounts). my promotion was announced to my internal team today, but salary has not been discussed at all. I'm not sure if this means i'm getting a "title only" promotion with no salary increase (which I think would be ridiculous), or whether it is my responsibility to go and ask for an accompanying raise. (I think i'm going to do this no matter what... already have some time booked on my boss's calendar tomorrow morning.)

in your experience, what is a good amount to ask for? I was thinking of starting with either 20% or 15% and negotiating down from that. Is that too much? Should I be asking for more if I'm hoping for ~15%? Keep in mind that I've only been with this company for 7 months.

I would definitely ask about compensation. Your boss may already have a number in mind...I've never heard of anyone negotiating an adjustment when they were given an internal promotion. I have seen people negotiate when applying for a job as an internal candidate though.

you should do a PacNW tour (or even just Bend/PDX).

you like food, beer, and wine? we've got that.

Bend is totally on my list. My wife's trips out there haven't been convenient for me the past year. Maybe in 2013.

I was going to start a best 2012 muzak today. Ill wait and piggy back on yours. Just remember: no Sufjan.

First, it's always way easier to tell other people what is wrong with their list than to put yours out there. Like how Rolling Stone had two Bob Dylan songs on their list. Is it 1968?

Second, no Sufjan, promise. You won't like some selections tho.

Congrats! Nonny is really good at this stuff so follow his advice (if he still reads the CT). Definitely research Glassdoor.com and know what you are worth, and use this information once money comes up (and it will).

yeah, i didn't "apply" for the position and haven't been told anything about a salary adjustment at all. we had a 20 minute conversation yesterday where he asked me if i would be interested in the job, gave me the deets, and that was that. it was announced today, people congratulated me.... but nothing about the $$. I have some other details to work out with closing out my old job/what's my title exactly, so i figured salary negotiation could be part of that discussion too.

It's not the most exciting thing, but I buy my dad a calendar every year, one of those page-a-day ones. And he's a big reader, so I get books too. Of course, I have to ask him what he wants so it's no surprise.

If toilet paper was a legitimate hit, then how about just some toiletry upgrades/refills. Razor blades are silly expensive so that could be something he would appreciate.

I got my dad a blu-ray player with his favorite DVDs. I usually get him yard equipment/tools from Lowes. I got my fiancee's dad a 6 month beer-of-the-month club subscription since he is a huge beer snob.

My dad bought my bike from me cause I'm getting a new one, so I bought him some cycling shoes and a bike computer. Got the combo very cheap for how high quality the gear is thanks to Black Friday.

I would ask from a naive perspective. 20% feels a little steep though. I would guess in the 10-15% range.

No, I gotta list as well. Not a long one tho. I was pretty underwhelmed this year. 8 albums maybe 15 songs. Everything else not that noteworthy. indie is dead.

Gawd I'm exhausted right now. Might be time to shoot a little pool and wake up.

Pop and hip hop had a good year though. And I agree the chillbuzzsurfwave shit bedroom pop crap is donezo, which is a good thing. There was still some great "indie," tho, whatever the fuck that is.

I got this for my dad:

I'm trying to figure out what you're referring to here.

As TwinAndre would say, people who don't know how to play their guitars. Just soulless music in general, the arrythmic Brooklyn based crap that has dominated the blogs for the past two years, calling itself chillwave or bedroom pop.

GOOD music

Wrote this to some friends that are helping me finalize, but G.O.O.D. music disappointed me this year. Cruel Summer was mostly a letdown, as was much of the other Kanye/Pusha T stuff on other releases. I think the Black Hippie and Odd Future crews had a better year by far.
