Apologies in advance if this was already posted. Larry Brown recently wrote a piece for the Player's Tribune about Bill Self and there was this little nugget. In 1985, Brown was the head coach of KU while Danny Manning played there. Also on Brown's coaching staff that year were Bill Self, R.C. Buford, Gregg Popovich, and Alvin Gentry. The Jayhawks went 35-4 and lost to Duke in the Final Four.

Just thought it was interesting that Manning was taught by such impressive coaches.

85-86, technically. In 84-85, OU and Wayman Tisdale were still making waves in the Big 8. Won the conference and the tourney championship against Iowa State. Lost to Memphis State in the Elite Eight, which Memphis later had to vacate. Danny's first year would've been 84-85. His senior year in HS he played in Lawrence and it was a big deal when he came to town because everybody knew he was going to KU and was a man among boys.

Just did some research and.......Wayman Tisdale died 7 years ago? What? I missed that when it happened. Also, to show you how times have changed, Tisdale averaged 24 and 10 and was the big 8 POY as a freshman and then he came back and played TWO MORE years at oklahoma before going pro as a junior.

Also, that was a helluva staff that Larry Brown had at Kansas..wow.

That staff put Kansas on a 3 year NCAA probation for recruiting violations when they left for the Spurs. Hope Danny didn't learn everything from Larry Brown

Yes, that probation really set the Kansas program back. The Jayhawk Hoop Program has never recovered. Also, Brown, Buford, Popovich and Gentry basically had their career ruined as a result. They have accomplished nothing since the mid-80s.

It's a little odd that we have a gazillion page thread complaining about UNC cheating but this is not a big deal because they won a championship & there were no long term repercussions on the program or coaches. Brown has put all 3 college programs that he's coached on probation, Calipari gets roasted here regularly for less.

In the NBA, Danny was coached by Gene Shue, Don Casey, Mike Schuler, Larry Brown (again), Lenny Wilkens, Paul Westphal, Danny Ainge, George Karl, Jerry Sloan, Don Nelson, and Rick Carlisle.

8,813 career wins out of that group, and multiple hall of famers. Good group to learn from.

Someone (hey maybe Wake Sports Marketing intern???) needs to compile a list of all of the coaches Danny has played under or coached with, including assistants in the NBA, etc. I'm sure that would be an impressive group and could be used in some recruiting literature.
