Remember when DePaul & St.John's were consistant national powers ? What happened after Ray Meyer and his son and what happened after Louis Carnesecca ?

Are we headed down this path ?

Or are we gonna come back from the depths like Purdue, Providence and South Carolina ?

:noidea:

DePaul was horrible with Ray Meyer's son, Jerry as coach. Their facilities are garbage and they play their home games in Rosemont which is about an hour plus ride from campus with traffic. There is a reason that DePaul has been terrible for 20 years plus with a few exceptions.

Things could be changing for them as they are building a new home game facility right next to McCormick Place in the heart of the city. Facilities and investment in the program plus a good coach makes all the difference.

How do you define national power? As if Wake has ever been a "consistent national power"?

St. John's has won 20+ games three times in the past six years. They blow right now (they'll likely lose their 16th game in a row this weekend), but it's not like they went into some crazy nose dive 25 years ago that they haven't recovered from. Have they underachieved during that time compared to their #historicalcompetitiveness? Yes, but you're also talking about a team that was 21-12 last season. I don't think you could find anybody on these boards who wouldn't trade the past five years of Wake hoops for the past five years of St. John's basketball, excluding this year since they somehow suck worse than us.

National power is definitely an overstatement of what we used to be. We were a good program for many years, that spent a lot of time in the top 25, and even had a couple of year where we were among the elite, but disappointed in the postseason. We're certainly just a shell of the program we used to be and prospects of getting back to wherever we were certainly aren't looking any better.

Not Entirely accurate. At the end of the 90's SJU was the 4th winningest basketball program in NCAA history (behind Kansas, Kentucky and UNC) and now they are 8th and falling. The Norm Roberts years were awful, they were 81-101 in 6 seasons. They also vacated about 50 wins from the Jarvis era because Jarvis cheated, a lot. They are terrible this year because they let Lavin go after he restored the program to respectability and many of Lavin's players decided to leave too. They are barren of talent this year and are sucking badly....but Mullen was a great player so he should be able to turn it around (sound familiar?).

NC State won two national championships and was generally the second best team in the ACC. They hired Les Robinson and a series of mediocre coaches and have been lost in the wilderness for 30 plus years. UVA was a top national team for a while in the Sampson era and sucked for 30 years or so until Bennet. Most recruits do not know these teams even had a history.
It seems that is where we are heading now.

Oh yeah, people like to act like Duke-UNC is the age old rivalry in the ACC, but I remember when the rivalry was State-UNC and Duke-UNC was secondary.
