The #STLCards announce they have dismissed Manager Mike Matheny. Bench Coach Mike Shildt named as the interim manager.
Hitting Coach John Mabry & Assistant Hitting Coach Bill Mueller have been relieved of their duties.
Mark Budaska & George Greer added as hitting coaches.
"Hitting coaches John Mabry and Bill Mueller followed Matheny out the door, and long-time system stalwarts Mark Budaska and George Greer will take their place. Budaska and Greer have been the guys the Cardinals send their broken hitters to, so their promotion is a long-overdue move that could inject life into a listless offense."
Gant did not play under Shildt in the minors, but has been around two other coaches who were promoted after the dismissal of Matheny and hitting coaches John Mabry and Bill Mueller. Although Gant is a pitcher, he has first-hand experience of what Mark Budaska and George Greer have done with Memphis players this season and other Cardinals minor leaguers in the past.
"Hitters have success when they're down there in Memphis, I don't know exactly what it is, but whatever it is he's doing it and we're excited to have him up here."
The Cardinals promoted longtime coach Ron "Pop" Warner to the role of bench coach. The team made the announcement Thursday afternoon as it readied for the opener of a five-game, four-day series against the first-place Cubs. Warner and new hitting coaches Mark Budaska and George Greer are expected to be with the team Thursday night. It will be the first time Shildt has his complete coaching staff in place.
At the introductory press conference for Shildt, Cardinals officials said they were planning to split the duties of bench coach into a more committee-type approach. Greer and Jose Oquendo were mentioned as coaches who could take on different parts of the bench coach job.
Shildt said he had "a vision" of how this would work.
