Family Separation at the Border: US citizens are now being detained

It's a fucking disgrace that kids are suffering on the border because democrats are to caught up in partisan bullshit to pass desperately needed funding.

Keeping kids suffering is good optics for democrats so rather than help, they would rather watch kids suffer to score political points.

Do you EVER get anything right?

McConnell put multiple poison pills in his bill. It's not a clean bill.

For someone who allegedly doesn't like Trump, you sure cover his ass a lot.

You’re even dumber than you think we think you are.

The administration has unilateral ability to change their policy. There’s plenty of money being spent here that can be better directed.

Pretty brazen to pin this on Democrats. “It’s your fault we’re torturing kids. Why won’t you stop us?” The fuck, man?

Funding for what? whatabout, are you still arguing there's not enough funds for soap and toothbrushes? We're spending $775 per kid.

If we were only holding the kids for 72 hours max (as is dictated by law), instead of weeks, it would be a lot cheaper!

It should be a simple clean bill. Nothing but money for the kids with absolute direction of how the money is legally allowed to be used.

It’s a lot more nuanced than that and the bucket at ORR that needs to be refilled is larger than that and involves s lot if critical infrastructure nation wide. And the crisis is so present that you have to pass a bill that will be signed by the president. If a signable bill doesn’t get the the president’s desk before the July 4th recess, the situation will get exponentially worse.

I like the house bill as it stands (it doesn’t go far enough, but I think it pushes as much as it can without a certain veto). It provides guardrails on the spending but doesn’t try to enforce a lot of regulations that would make it DOA. Best course of action is the house appropriations bill followed up with a stand alone bill that addresses standards and policy at the border.

And this is a horrible take without knowledge of the administration’s position on what’s happening at the border and the conversation happening among our lawmakers.

Catamount, if $765 a day is not enougg, how much more would be appropriate? What should that money pay for?

the price tag/day isn't the [most immediate] issue. the coffer out of which they pay the $765 is empty. The appropriations bill refills the HHS bucket that funds ORR which is tasked with taking care of the kids.

No, the funding bill isn't a solution to the humanitarian crisis at the border. But it's necessary to care for the kids and keep infrastructure in place until a more comprehensive solution can be reached. The zero tolerance policy needs to go. Instead of detention and separation, minors and/or families seeking asylum would be released to the care of family members with a case worker. This program had over a 97% success rate in families showing up for their asylum hearing and only cost $35/family/day.

Trump nixed that program in favor of detention for all as a deterrent. However, as we've seen by talking to people on the border, there it's not much of a deterrent because of several factors: bad information, some non-profits acting in bad faith promising asylum and encouraging the migration to justify their presence, fear of staying where they are (potential detention is better than having your family killed), among others.

To lessen the impact of the border issue, you need to reinstate the case worker program, fund asylum judges to clear out the backlog, get rid of the zero tolerance policy, and stop the slowdown at POE creating desperate and dangerous conditions on the Mexican side of the border.

For those kids that are detained - we need to adhere to the Flores agreement and fund HHS/ORR so they can care for unaccompanied minors (through placement in facilities designed for the care of children and provide case workers for minors released into custody of family members, not slightly less inhumane prisons).

Blaming everything on Democrats (and specifically Obama) is pretty much the GOP go-to argument these days. If Trump or any other Republican gets caught doing something that's illegal, or unethical, or involves harming someone or a group of people, or almost anything that's negative, you can bet that the inevitable response of any Trumpite will be "but y'all do it too!", or "y'all did it first!", or some such. It justifies everything, apparently.

Good post, IAT. Glad someone like you knows what they’re talking about.

Is illegal immigration even really a problem for our country now? Our birth rates are way down, and we'll need people to keep up our economic growth
