Computer chaos feared over 2015's leap second

The year 2015 will have an extra second — which could wreak havoc on the infrastructure powering the Internet.

At 11:59 p.m. on June 30, clocks will count up all the way to 60 seconds. That will allow the Earth's spin to catch up with atomic time.

The Earth's spin is gradually slowing down, by about two thousandths of a second per day, but atomic clocks are constant. That means that occasionally years have to be lengthened slightly, to allow the slowing Earth to catch up with the constant clock.

But last time it happened, in 2012, it took down much of the Internet. Reddit, Foursquare, Yelp and LinkedIn all reported problems, and so did the Linux operating system and programs using Java.

I remember that day.

It started early, with the dogs barking before it was time - seconds before. The whole day felt. . . off. Stomachs rumbling at inopportune times, a yearning to leave work just a second early. Traffic was gridlock. People were panicking. The world stopped. For one second.

Really only an issue for things based off the linux kernel.

Still amusing what trivialities can bring software to it's knees.

I'm just picturing all of the jackasses with too much time on their hands who are (i) adding Y2K15 planning to their annual goals; (ii) setting up meetings and conference calls to address the pending crisis; (iii) jamming their legal depts to drop everything they're doing and re-write all of their contract templates to mitigate against the exposure of said crisis; (iv) getting w/ HR to develop Y2k15 training; and (v) jamming their vendors.

(vi) stocking fall-out shelters to prepare for Leap Second Doomsday.

What better time for the coyotes to attack than when all of Oregon is thrown into a momentary state of confusion?
