Final Standings of Directors Cup...

Down to an impressive #110 as of the end of the fall semester 2014, behind such juggernauts as SIU-Edwardsville, Lamar, and Jacksonville State. Only Pitt from the ACC is ranked lower (#149 - ouch). Duke is #55.

I just am bummed to think the current generation of students wont get the chance to roll the quad and get shitfaced drunk like we all did during our time at MSD when the directors cup rankings got published

Tangentially related but FB tells me Wake had never won an individual ACC event championship in women's indoor T&F until this week. We won the high jump.

That's not tangential at all. Perfectly relevant. That's great news.

In addition to Nyki Caldwell winning the high jump, Sydney White from Wake finished 3rd in the pole vault, and Kyle Graves 4th in the mile. The Wake women were in 5th after yesterday, but there are a lot more events today.

I suspect that the guidance on de-emphasis on athletics at Wake comes from the top of the administration. Fr Hesburgh, long time Notre Dame president and mentor to Hatch passed away. His claim to fame was moving Notre Dame to being a much more academically oriented school, instead of a guys jock school. Hatch may have wanted to do the same, but forgot that Wake didn't start from the same position in the collegiate athletic world that Notre Dame did. This may help account for the lower Directors Cup standing of Wake in recent years.

President Hearn wanted Wake to have strong athletics, but done the right way, and he wanted all collegiate athletes to get a better deal at their schools. Thus, he was part of the Knight commission on reforming intercollegiate athletics for many years.

White (L) and Caldwell (R) celebrating. Go Deacs!

In order for Wake to score Director's Cup in track, we
need individuals(or relays) to place in the top 8 of their event
at the NCAA Championships. Last year Sydney White was
13th in the Pole Vault and Jessie Merckle was 12th in the
javelin. Both were sophomores last year and were highly
ranked coming out of high school, so expect those two to
be our best hope for Director's Cup points in track.

Thanks for the info Ziggy. Have any of the Deacs qualified for the indoor national championships? Can you get Director's Cup points from the indoor national championships?

Unfortunately, I don't believe we have any
athletes that will make the cut for Indoor NCAA's(Director's Cup points
are awarded for Indoor Track.

In addition to Sydney White and Jessie Merckle, other track athletes
that could get us Director's Cup points are Simon Holden and Kyle Graves(800/1500 meters),
Nyki Caldwell(High Jump), Katie Adair(Pole Vault), and Charlie Ionata(Hammer Throw).

Hearn went down the same path as Hatch, and he tried to bring everyone down with him via the Knight Commission. It was only when he realized that he was tilting at windmills that he started stepping up athletic s.

Is it more difficult to qualify for indoors? Sydney White for example, why would she qualify for outdoors but not indoors championships?

Yes. It is more difficult to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships. The Top 16 in the Nation per event (by performance mark from the start of the season through this weekend), qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championship.

Outdoor Track has two regionals(East and West) (also known as the "1st Round"). If you place in the top 12 at your region, you go to Nationals(so 24 in each event at Nationals for Outdoor Track).

Sydney White for instance was 10th in the East Region last year in Outdoor Track, but she finished 13th at the NCAA Finals(East plus West).......Sometimes athletes step up(or down) at NCAA finals, and sometimes one region may be better in an event than another.

The 16th best mark in the Women's Pole Vault right now is 14' 0". Sydney has jumped 13' 6.5".

In Outdoor Track, performance marks get you into your Region (top 48) but you have to finish in the top 12 in your Region or you don't go to the NCAA Finals......I watched a guy in the 10k about 5-6 years ago in the East Region come in as the 48th best mark. They ran the 10k on a late May Friday night at NCA&T in Greensboro under pretty good heat and humid conditions. A large portion of the field really suffered towards the end of the race and the 48th seed ended up 12th in the race (qualifying for NCAA's). We (Wake) had a really good male javelin thrower a couple of years ago. He went to the Regional as one of the top 5 seeds but ended up 13th in the East Region (didn't qualify for NCAA finals).

Great explanations, Ziggy. Thanks.
