Solar power plants in Germany produced a record 22 gigawatts of electricity per hour on Saturday, according to Reuters. This was enough to meet 50% of the country's electric power needs for the day.

The German government decided to shut down all nuclear power plants by 2022, following the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Those plants will be replaced by renewable energy sources including wind and solar.

Germany ain't exactly the home of sunshine. Think of what we could produce in the South, Texas, AZ, CA, NV.

Nah that would be using hippie dippie science and science is bad.

Just think of what we could already be doing if the Dems didn't hate Bush more than they love America

Can we just do it already and quit pretending coal and other fossil fuels are the answer?

Europe has a lot of the answers, but since they are "socialist", they are on ignore.

Germany made a serious mistake going away from nuclear power. America should make a goal to get at least 80% of its power from nuclear power.

America is missing a massive opportunity with renewable energy. Instead we are wasting time with fracking and Keystone XL.

Exactly...we could create and patent some of the new technologies. Also if we were doing Europe is doing, we'd marginalize the Middle east and drop all energy costs.

But why think about it? Or do it?

All we'd do is create jobs and lower costs for businesses and families.

It's like being the world wide leader in pager production in 1998.

I've thought for years that President Obama should have used his political capital to stake out a decade long energy independence plan instead of health care reform.

"An adorable engineer couple has taken to IndieGoGo and asked for $1 million to help aid in starting their dream of creating solar panel roadways throughout America. With their estimation, they believe that if every concrete road in America were to be replaced with their hexagonal panels, we would be cutting greenhouse gasses by 75 percent and generating three times as much energy as we do now, and all of it would be 100 percent clean straight from the sun.

It already sounds a little too good to be true, but they claim their roads offer so much more than energy. Best of all they never have to be painted ever again thanks to LED lights installed in each individual panel. The self-powered lights can be used to light up highways at night, create more visible traffic lanes, adjust parking lots when necessary, and make the world look like an awesome science fiction movie.

They never have to be repaved either. We use a lot much money each and every year fixing our concrete roads, but these panels last longer and merely need to be swapped out with a new one if it shuts down or wears out over time. Speaking of which, each panel can be individually monitored, so maintenance workers will know immediately if a panel goes out."

Not practical to retrofit, but we should consider trying it out for a new road and parking lot or two.

I posted a video about those a few weeks ago. The potential is very high.

What has Obama's energy policy been besides the "try everything" approach and working with Solyndra?

This is a picture from my hometown in southern California of "solar farms" being set up. I would love to see an increase in renewable energy use, but land-use issues are going to be a big deal as these solar farms gain traction. You have to find the right balance between sustaining desert / wilderness and not taking food producing land out of use which is part of what's happening with these solar farms. No farms, no food.

Parking lots and roads, no need for large space eating solar farms. Unless they're in South Dakota.

Don't forget rooftops.
