Taking my 2 boys up there tomorrow for a day of hiking. Never been before. Any recs? Hoping to see the wild ponies. Other than that we are kind of clueless as to what we need to do/see.

8 & 10. No specific length desired....looking more for views than distance.

Massie Gap to Mt. Rogers, 8 miles out and back is the obvious choice

Start at Massie Gap in Grayson Highlands State Park
Take the Rhododendron Gap trail to the AT
Take the AT/Wilburn Ridge trail to the Mt. Rogers spur trail (AT is easier/Wilburn Ridge is more scenic and difficult)

Here's a map. Massie Gap is at the bottom middle, (large image)

This.

Been there about 5 times in the past 3 yrs and we've seen ponies every time (including camping in mid- Nov '13, when we awoke to a windchill of -10 and it was snowing sideways. Awesome.)

There's a good short hike out of the visitors center. Twin Pinnacles Trail I think.

We saw a bunch of ponies last fall.

Pinnacles for the views definitely. The ponies hang out about a half a mile up the Massie Gap trail as well, so you don't have to dedicate too much time or distance if they are your main objective. Wilson Creek is a nice, short hike as well, and will be less crowded than the others discussed.

Too late for advice, but just wanna say Grayson Highlands is a dope place for backpacking. Lots of biological diversity. Have a blast!
