Indiana, the RFRA, and the backlash

Also I'm pretty sure most people who advocate heavily for trans and gay rights are also very interested in the minimum wage problems in the country. At least in my experiences interacting with the those communities in Boston. Wage inequality is prevalent even moreso for some of the extremely marginalized groups (as is homelessness).

So the "fix" to the Indiana RFRA specifically addresses the exact points we've been arguing, but since the Indiana RFRA was never a threat to discriminate, the original RFRA will still serve it's purpose. I look forward to junebug explaining to me what the RFRA does, after this needless "fix" is applied.

Well now I think it's basically just the same as the federal law is. This makes it pretty difficult to use the law as a sword rather than a shield IMO - although I'm sure that people will find a way.

It was already basically the same as the federal law. I'm not really sure what's happening, I wish some neutral, non biased legal expert could explain to me exactly how the Indiana RFRA is being changed.

Do you even know a transexual person?

Yes I know plenty. I worked on a year-long project for a class on a report aimed at improving trans-police interactions and was the liaison with an advocacy group for a class of 1L's.

Damn. I should have gotten 10-1 odds from palma that numbers would mention law school in his answer. #missedopportunities

So when you start your own law practice and have to hire a secretary and it comes down to an equally qualified normal looking girl and someone who is easily identifiable as a transexual, which are you hiring to be your receptionist?

Both. One for the briefs and one for the boards.

Trannies can't get pregnant and leave. #teamtranny

Real talk though. The funniest thing about palma's hypothetical is that both could be trans.

I would hire whichever one was better. I'm not sure how I would know someone was trans though beyond suspicions unless there was a serious disconnect between the way they presented and the way they spoke or the way their body was shaped.

"Trans" is generally acceptable as an umbrella term "trannies" normally isn't. Some people don't care, others do. If you're addressing a group of people on the topic you would never use "trannies" if you wanted to come across as making a good faith effort to respect what people would like to be called. I believe "tranny" is viewed as a derogatory slur since it's been predominantly utilized as a derogatory slur and co-opted by people who are making fun of or mocking people who are transsexual (or in pornos).

A lot of people who would generally be classified trans simply refer to be called by the gender they identify with regardless of their sex at birth. So an individual born with a penis and identifies as a female would just want to be referred to as "she/her" and not have any sort of qualifier in "trans" related to it.

this is what started it. i still wonder. what year was the last time elc used nigger as a pejorative? i'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say in the 90s when he got to wake. fag? maybe ***maybe*** he's stopped using it, but i'm fairly certain it happened in the last 2 years (and bravo if so). so at what point will the machismo-laden bad asses stop using tranny as pejorative?

also, the fact that people can't separate offending people based on disparaging names for a group of people versus disparaging someone for the content of their character is also surprising/not surprising.

What I can tell you is that when I first heard the n-word, I was a kid. I'm guessing this happened sometime in the late 70s, likely before you were born. I heard it from a kid the same age of me who probably heard it from his jarhead dad. In typical kid fashion, I was eager to show off my newly expanded vocabulary. The opportunity arose to use the word while watching TV that night and I did. You could hear a pin drop. Remember that scene in A Christmas Story when Ralph drops an f-bomb? Same thing. "What did you say?" was uttered slowly and sternly from my dad's mouth. It was also the same result as A Christmas Story, as I soon found myself in the bathroom with a bar of soap in my mouth for the only time in my life. I learned my lesson then and have always been proud of my parents for that.

As for fag, who knows? The term was used with fairly commonly growing up, but hardly peppered the language like shit or fuck. Watch Weird Science or Bill & Ted or A Fish Called Wanda. It was a general term of derision that didn't need to be oriented toward an actual gay person. We knew who the gay kids were in school, just as people figured it out in college and beyond. It's not like the insult was hurled at actual gay people. You'd call your friend a fag for not doing something you wanted him to be a part of. Something like, "Hey, don't be such a fag, dude. Come join the circle jerk."

What's the plural of trans? Transes? Is that e pronounced like Ramses or transit?

I would imagine that if anyone is dumb enough to turn away paying customers, they won't be around long. No better way to activate a competitor than by limiting one's customer universe.
