Individual Player Performance Today

Moto was a close second/third to missed free throws/techs as the main reason Wake lost. He made five or six truly bad decisions. He will improve though.

I'd love to see Moto back up Devin at the 4 more often. He technically does now, but they basically just use him down low on defense and spot him up outside on offense. It's clear that there just is not a whole lot to do with him right now, especially on offense, and despite many pointing out that he's 6'6, he also has a near 7'1 wingspan with a 225-pound frame and some serious hops. He also is one of the few guys on this team that can take post players with his back to the basket. Buzz has never been particularly adept at playing to his players strengths, but since Moto is clearly not ready for the perimeter yet and he potentially offers a ton in the paint, I say that we use him there even if he is a bit undersized.

There was a lot of intensity on the court (as opposed to the head coach per usual) but McKie was lackadaisical at both ends of the court. Moto can't help it--the skills aren't there. But I cannot figure out why he is spotting up for threes. He jacked up three of them and none were close.

watched the game, have no problem with McKie he consistently was matched with Wiggans or some one else on defense that he was giving up size to and did a very good job. His focus was more on the defensive end.

Moto needs to be limited to inside the 3 point line on offense. Like I would pull his ass out immediately every time he shoots a three.

He needs to be limited to dunks and layups. That is his range. His offensive rating per KenPom is 74. That is terrible.

Travis just acts like he doesn't care. Such a talent when he plays hard, just doesn't so often

And out senior leader missed 3 layups. One of which was an unguarded 2 inch bunny. After 4 years, in a big game, I expect him to be able to handle that.

He had 6 points, on two 3 pointers. He was 0-3 from two (ie. 3 missed layups).

He's not making much of an effort if he only take 6 shots.

And just to pile on, he was 0-1 on the front end of a 1 and 1. And there you have 6 easy points that could have changed the completion of the game.

And to put it into proper perspective, Moto took 7 shots (0-7).

Maybe the real criticism of Dino should be he didn't recruit any leaders.

Kind of a weird game. We turned Kansas into a jump shooting team but struggled to box out from our zone. Bet Duke wishes they'd zoned up against them after watching that. Missed so many front-ends of one-and-ones early, got close but never really felt like we had any chance of winning. Hard to tell how much better we are and how much of it was just Codi having the best game of his career. Led us in points, assists, threes made, free throws made, steals, zero turnovers, led all scorers by almost double digits... Devin fouling out and Wiggins being sick - just a weird game.

Lots of nerves early, but Madison, Codi, Devin, and Cav all held up against Kansas. And Coron came on late. Moto and Rountree were rough, surprised to get some decent minutes out of Andre. Good thing he's played a good amount of minutes this year - if Devin gets a reputation we'll have to play him.

Curious to see if Travis is going to continue regressing as the team around him gets stronger. Very odd to see Cavanaugh play so much stronger than him for an entire game. One free throw for him? Really?

[Redacted] or no [Redacted], have to admit this makes the Haas thing sting a bit more. Throw a point guard and legit center in with the codi/devin/cav senior class... We could be really, really good. Still can be, but he would have been perfect for this team.

Buzz's management of Moto is one of his biggest micro-level coaching failures. Moto is first on the team in usage despite being the least efficient offensive player on the team!! I'm sure a bit of this is small sample randomness, it isn't too far off from last year's full season for Moto (high volume, low efficiency offense).

The sad thing is Moto could be an incredible asset for the team if coached properly. He had 20% DR% and 8.4% OR% as a freshman and has gotten off to a great rebounding start this year (18.6% OR% through 6 games). He is the classic player that gets turned, by a good coach, into a rebounding monster and defensive specialist while on offense being high efficiency / low volume (only taking easy looks when defenses double off him etc).

If If you remember back to Duke's 2010 national title team, Lance Thomas would regularly pass up open shots and rarely score but was still a valuable piece and played a ton due to his defense and over 10% OR%. That should be more of the model for Moto. But instead of being a nice asset Moto is a huge liability currently because he shoots too damn much and that's on Buzz.
