Is Haiti a shithole?

Been to plenty of US shitholes where the people are major shiholes.
 
Why would anyone want a bunch of socialists who enjoy national health care and education off of someone else’s back?
 
Maybe this has something to do with why Haiti is a shithole to some people:

From 1957 to 1971, Francois Duvalier governed Haiti under a repressive dictatorship, but some argue the United States tolerated the regime because it was staunchly anti-Communist and a counterbalance to Communist Cuba during the Cold War. [citation ] When Duvalier died, his son, Jean-Claude ("Baby Doc") took over and maintained many of his father's policies.[4]:3–4

The Reagan administration forced Baby Doc to leave in 1986, and when a repressive military dictatorship arose, President Reagan suspended aid. The George H.W. Bush Administration also embargoed and then blockaded Haiti, suspending all but humanitarian aid.[4]:4

After the fall of the Duvalier family and other military regimes, Jean-Bertrand Aristide was elected in 1990, but he was toppled in a coup 7 months later. From 1991–1994 the Clinton Administration imposed an economic blockade, which further impoverished the country, and eventually the Clinton Administration intervened militarily in 1994 to restore Aristide to power.[4]:4[2] U.S. support for Aristide waned following corruption concerns, and a February 2004 armed rebellion led to his exile.[4]:4

After Rene Preval succeeded Aristide, aid flowed again to Haiti, totaling $1.5 billion from 1990 to 2005.[4]:7

It doesn’t matter if it is or it isn’t. He meant black. You know that because he means European with Norway. He just knows the name of the country because he had just spoken to the prime minister before. He doesn’t say doctors, engineers, or programmers. He says Norway. White people. White people = skilled. Black and brown people = bums.

Thanks for the lecture, I get it. Still, US policy in the Caribbean has been atrocious all because of mishandling of Cuba for over a half century, on both sides of the aisle, and of course the sugar market. I’m speaking to the “but it is a shithole the pres only speak the truth” assholes

Yea, we should have been trading with them for the last fifty years just like we do with the Chicoms.
 
We turn every country we invade into shitholes. Invaded Haiti, Afghanistan, N Korea, Iraq, Syria, Germany, Japan, Nicaragua, El Salvador plus another 100. Some survive it. Some remain shitholes after we wreck them.

That's a clueless take on Haiti. Also very interesting take on Japan and Germany but we'll ignore it. Haiti's shitholery is rooted in brutal slavery brought on by the French then The French Revolution --> slave revolt, Toussaint, and Dessalines. The biggest impact in the history of US and Haiti relations was actually the impact Haiti had on the US. The first successful slave revolt that turned into a "republic" absolutely massacred the white population of Haiti and destroyed much of the sugar and coffee production. The successful slave/black revolt and ensuing genocide of any remaining white inhabitants in 1804 scared the South shitless, and had an enormous impact on Southern policies and Southern life in general moving forward.

But Haiti itself never recovered from the slave revolt and Dessalines in terms of making what was previously the richest country in the Americas into a poor shithole with completely inept and cruel government/ruling classes. Haiti is now going on 220+ years of abject poverty, and it has little to do with the US. If you blame a white foreign oppressor it'd have to be the French, but at this point you'd really have to blame the ruling classes of Haiti itself.

Haiti has a truly fascinating, and more than a bit tragic, history. I'm surprised so few here seem to have any knowledge of "the first Black Republic." Definitely a good read for people with the slightest bit of interest in history.

Interesting response. Sounds like you agree with Trump on this one, and want less whitey intervention and just leave Haitians on their own in Haiti.

Hmm, so the most powerful economic force the world has ever known, mere miles offshore from Haiti, could do nothing to improve its shitholery? An economy that spent trillions of dollars around the world on human improvement was powerless over this shithole? Fascinating
 
Always good when the talking points about language has firmly taken root as to drown out the real issue.
 
Wouldn’t expect a trump supporter to realize that the Dominican Republic is different from Haiti
